... a few days ago, my car burnt down in a private gated parking lot. It happened a few minutes after I parked it there, and went away. How can this happen? The fire didn't start in the engine (the front half was untouched by the fire), and it also didn't start at the battery (in the back, no damage there). Look at some more pictures here...

... no, this was in Germany, countryside location. On the premises of a company. Pretty safe location, you'd think.

catalytic converter could have overheated / blocked and set fire to the underseal underneath the car . . . or there could have been an electrical short . . . . or somebody could have set fire to it
... it appears to have started in the dashboard or near the front seats. Fine. That's all inside the passenger area. But how can the petrol then start burning (I believe that should be shielded by the floor panel for more tan 5 minutes)??? Wouldn't a leak in the fuel pipe, or ctalytic converter, rather cause a fire BELOW the floor panel?

... thank you all for the different stories and guesses! This is very helpful... not for the BMW in questionsmokin, that one is a write-off! ...I got another one the same day! But I was wondering if I should park it there again?! Can I park there with an even flashier car? Of course I'd hate to lose another car!!!

For me, the "electrics" fire story makes sense, because the BMW had 250,000km on the clock, and was 11 years old. It sometimes had electric hickups, like opening the lock of the booth while driving, like windows not always lowering that half-inch when opening the convertible roof, like mirrors not always tilting when backing up, like bad engine control when switching engine off and on again... when idling, you could press the gas, and the revs went lower! I suspected a slow death, not such a spectacular one biggrin!

Of course, I am aware of the Berlin scenes! However, my location is more countryside and doesn't have such a record of riots, or torching cars... and as I mentioned, it happened in the backyard of a company (gated).
