Getting rid of private plate

I recently bought an early E46 3-series BMW that the previous owner put a private plate on (I presume in an attempt to hide it's age). Is there any way to have the car returned to a correct 'age related' plate other than buying a personalised plate from that year? I think the personalised plate on the car at the moment just looks a bit naff.

Thanks very much all. I had hoped there might be a free way to do it (as there isn't really any good reason to change it) but maybe someone will give me a few pounds for the old plate.

You write to dvla requesting to surrender the current reg and ask for them to issue a standard dated plate (preferably the original issued to the car on registration). Send the V5C, Original MoT and note the tax disc serial number in your letter.

Send by Recorded Delivery, and expect it to take a few weeks...

That sounds even better. I can't see the plate being worth anything really so would rather not have to try selling it. Is this something you've done yourself?

Rayy, thanks for the confirmation, sounds like the way to go. Now I just have to pluck up the courage to allow the DVLA the opportunity to cock something important up for no real possible benefit. Common sense would suggest not giving them the chance but for some reason the plate does bug me so I'll have to chance it.

I can't see it being worth trading the car in. It's probably worth more weighed in than traded in
