g'day all.

mulling over what cheaper car to get as my daily commuter (80miles a day, so a diesel it needs to be)... we've been looking at a focus, it was a 60plate 1.6 tdci titanium. nice spec car, but my god slow!

so then last night i had an idea! an alfa 159! lovely cars, wanted one before I got what I got now. it's a good car, with plenty of spec and look like cheap cars but great looking! winner!

anyone got as a daily commute? how is it for fuel? is it fun? worth a re map? much difference in economy between the 1.9 and 2.4? budget of around 6k-7k.

really?

don't really fancy the passat, looks a bit dull for my liking. the alfa in sport wagon just looks cracking!

need to be making payments of around £150-200 a month. any suggestions?

i probably would look at the 1.9 jdtm engine.need the economy really.

but are they reliable? i need the car to reliable, engines may be ok..but what about the electrics? will they be ok?

have looked at a focus...2.0 tdci seem ok...but for the price, think I'd like an older alfa as it's a lot more stylish car.

heart says an alfa, the head says something like a 2 litre well specced focus!

it's the reliability that puts me off the alfa! such a pickle!

what other suggestions have people got?

i'm still here, suprised the thread has reached 5 pages!

my fiancee has a mondeo. 07 plate. titanium x. i've looked at a mk 3 mondeo as well, something comfy and good things about it.

will have to rule out a GT purely as we are planning for an addition to the family. so room is imperative as well. hence looking at the sportwagon variant.

people are tending to have mixed views, a lot of this is going through my head!

Looking at the obc on my 120d I'm averaging 48 to the gallon. That's with quite a few short journeys and school runs. So I think anything more that that and is be happy. Need to get my monthly car outgoings at around £300 including fuel and insurance.

This do-able with a 159 with a 25 year old male?

Is it actually confirmed that the Alfa has a vauxhall engine or is it the other way around? What other cars are out there then? Open my eyes as all I can think of is a focus and mondeo.

so a 1.9 won't be able to achieve on average 49mpg?

The extra £20 a week in fuel could work out better for what I'm paying out a month on car right now.

Surely the cruise control would help with the mpg?

Is there any specific you would like to know about the Giulietta? I have a 2.0 JTDM which is 2 years old and done 40,000 miles.
are they worth looking at? good to drive? cheap to run?

Have you considered a Mondeo ST TDCI 2.2 still a good looking car (not as good as the alfa) but drives better and probably better on fuel as well than the 2.4 whilst being near enough as quick.

Also quite cheap now as well

If can stretch to top end of budget I would go for the 2.2d Mazda 6 185 myself it is a very good engine and they are pretty quick for a diesel and to me look quite smart as well. Also handle nicely well specified and good on fuel very good all rounder!

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2010-60-REG-MAZDA-Mazda6...

Also lot of tuning potential as well

£500 sees you up to 222hp
£1500 sees you up to 246hp and near enough 400lb torque!
the mrs already has a mondeo, no need for 2 on the drive.

do like the mazda6! and wow in white looks really good! not many 180bhp models about on autotrader. really nice styling too

If her mondeo was a basic one then id consider it. But she's got the titanium x model with a few other extras.

Thinking would then 163 2.2 engine do. Get a remap on that and take it to just shy of 200bhp? Seen one on auto trader a takzuka variant? Looked great!

Read that on the Mazda 3, zoom zoom flashes up on dash when you enter the car, this the same on the 6?
