Morning. I’m new. But enough about me.

Monday saw a trip to a BMW dealer, a test drive of what I think might just be the best car in the real world and a £75,000 impulse buy. Oops.

I nipped in to look at a 1-series for my wife (but ended up getting a MINI). I know the DP and he was just getting out of his car – a 640d Gran Coupe. He suggested I had a drive.
20 minutes later I returned.
20 minutes after that I’d put a deposit down on a brand new MSport version.

313bhp & 460lb ft torque with an (alleged) 50mpg, all wrapped up in a beautiful (eye of the beholder and all that…) bodyshell and an unquestionably great handstitched, leather lined interior. Great accommodation (for 4 at least – third rear seat is child only) and a cavernous boot.

Result is 0-60 in just over 5 secs and real world performance to annoy just about any 4-seater car….in an almost two-tonne diesel.

Car arrives in a couple of days time. My excitement is palpable.

Expect me to wax lyrical ad nauseum once that day arrives. My apologies in advance.

The depreciation is going to be immense. Especially as so many 640d models are out there on cheap leases that are about to start dumping the market.

Unless you achieved a significant, significant discount, I'd say you made the dealer's day.
Dealer/BMW gave me £21800 discount/deposit contribution (benefit of walking in on the last day of the quarter)
Bought on PCP. Depreciation isn't my problem!

Welcome and congrats. You will get much interest if you post pics of your new arrival, especially if you can include a tin / carton of custard in the photo.

Also, expect several people to point out your folly in dropping such a huge amount of cash on a diesel biggrin edit - ah, I see 10PS got in whilst I was typing my reply biggrin

And an almost equal number telling you that they would have leased it instead.

And then a bun fight with some name-calling, hair-pulling, spelling/grammar pedants, possibly querying your sexual orientation/political persuasion or use of the phrase "your mum".

Welcome to PH!
  • looks above* "mmmmmmm

Thanks for the welcome.

PS - tin of custard??

Dont look at the price of a nearly new example as that might take the shine off your day wink
Already did that.

Even 1 year old examples cost more than I've paid for brand new, like for like.

Factor in the PCP and the new car is £10k cheaper and better spec'd than a 12 month old/5000 miles AUC. Gotta love the bargaining power of end of quarter.

  1. Shining

£21,800.00 discount. Wtf?

I would have laughed and walked out.
Really? Strange. Are you Harry Enfield? "Richer than yaw...etc".

Discounts make me smile.

£21,800 ones (especially off nice cars) can make me hard.

Often used to prove your claims on PH- for example:

Enjoy the new car thumbup
Is that real? He looks like an extra from Willy Wonka/Wizard of Oz?? How does he get a helmet to fit? or is he actually 4'10?

....and thanks!

So effectively , the Mini was thrown in free with the purchase of the BMW? Good deal.

Look forward to pics (with or without custard).

PS. Congratulations on a great new car. And welcome to PH.
More....MINI knocked down from £22,800 to £17,750 to £14,900. Like I say.... Benefit of last day of the quarter!!

...and thanks.

It's your money, it sounds like you spent it on something you want.

There are a lot of people on PH who say bad things about PCP.
This is normally because it's someone earning £600 a month asking if a £350pcm for 3 years is a good deal for a new BMW as they can "afford it".
Fair comment. These kind of people don't usually throw in a £5-figure deposit and buy a mini for cash alongside it though.

PCP done right is amazing. The total I'll pay on this car, including servicing, and if I pay the balloon, is still nearly £25,000 less than new list. Can't argue with that!

That is a really fast delivery time for a new car, isn't it?

The new 6 has a lot of presence on the road in comparison to the rest of their range. I'm sure it will prove highly capable, congratulations.
Custom order/build would have been 8 weeks.

This was a car that existed with BMW UK - there were 5 or 6 available. One matched the spec I wanted, plus had some extra bits on. Jobs a good 'un.

Even 8 weeks is a short lead time IMO.

Well done to you on your purchase and welcome to the mad house!

Sounds like a good deals to me too.

I always try to buy my cars new as well, and negotiate the best discount I can get from the repos time dealer.

People (who think they are smart) always say oh yeah you could have saved another 10K by buying a nearly new one.

And yet when you do try to look for a 12 month old example they all, seem to be advertised for more than I just paid for the new discounted model,I just bought!

So enjoy it, and please do post pictures too, I bet it will be a cracking car!
I vary. Last one was 12 months old, one before that new. All down the the deal around and usually, the keenness of BMW FS to incentivise new car sales.

6-12 months old examples of similar specs were £50-55k, 12-18 month old ones £46-52k.....all with double the APR and no material discount!

Good stuff Sir, they are lovely smile You should have bought the 335d but thats for another day smile
Looked at the 335d, 435d and factored in the 435d Gran Coupe. All lovely, but all would have been no material amount cheaper (and more expensive like-for-like) and looked very low rent by comparison.

Plus 3-series don't float my boat. Been there, done that, etc.

Just seems a bit Everest windows. You know? "Normally 20 grand but today we have the chairman's special offer of 10 grand" type of thing.

Did you have to haggle or was that the window price?
It was a March offer. Opening offer was £15,000 (£9500 from BMW, rest from the dealer), I pushed it up.

Offer now finished in terms of BMW's contribution. But others available. See here: http://www.bmw.co.uk/en_GB/topics/owners/offers/cu...

6-series offer is on a soft-top this month: http://www.bmw.co.uk/en_GB/topics/owners/offers/6-...

Since when did people have to act like such bellends?

If the chap is happy with his purchase then good for him, why come over all clever telling him how much it'll depreciate or which alternative model he should have bought? What does it achieve?

OP, enjoy your new car.
After years of membership on PH I've come to learn that there is a nasty minority on here, sad individuals who probably hide in their little bedrooms until Mummy calls them down for their supper.
True. Each to their own etc....
