On the back of a low loader, American (perhaps Aussie) 1970s coupe.
Looked like an outsize Capri.
The front had single headlights and a very deep, gaudy metal grille which was very pointed in the centre (pointing forwards).

I've googled and the closest I can see is a Buick skylark but the grille was much more chintzy and deep, also they all seem to be dual headlight.

Grand Torino?
Holy moly, just googled that, not a car to forget in a hurry. Sadly no, but thank you.

The headights were quite "smoothed" in...I don't mean faired but very vaguely like a cobra. Smooth, rounded wing. I'm explaining this really badly.

Def not a falcon... I don't think... But...

Closest I can find is along the lines of a 1970 camaro front end but with a Cadillac de ville grille (the gran torino elite mentioned is pretty close too) and it was a fastback. With rear strip lights.

No worries, cheers chaps.

I can definitely see where you're coming from but the grille was the dominant feature.

I never realised the Monaro used to be really quite so small.

Sorry, not really got net access at the mo.
I mentioned yesterday that the front looked like a camaro 1970ish.
But it was 100 per cent a fastback bodystyle with strip lights. If there's a camaro like that then I'm fairly certain it must have been that.
The grille of that Pontiac looks pretty close to what I saw
Oversized Capri is the best I can describe it in profile.

ETA thanks v much for ALL the responses, sorry if I sounded ungrateful. Cheers
