Ford GT Competition Series announced
Goodness knows when customers will actually get it, but here's the lighter, racier Ford GT
First things first: Ford has so far only confirmed the Competition Series for North America in "all announced production years." Furthermore, despite an extensive range of weight-saving measures, an actual kerbweight hasn't been released. And it still has just the 655hp...
There are a suite of interesting standard (and deleted) features though. The carbon wheels, titanium wheel nuts and titanium exhaust that are optional on the regular GT are fitted on the Competition Series, for example. There's also a focus on reducing weight high up in the car, with a new Perspex engine cover, a carbon fibre rod to hold the bonnet open, and Gorilla Glass behind the bulkhead that's half as weighty as regular glass.
The air-con, radio, storage bins and cupholders have been ditched too; the GT was hardly an accommodating, luxurious supercar beforehand, so this is a pretty drastic step. There's plenty of visible carbon too - "copious carbon" in fact, according to Ford - to reflect your commitment to the lightweight cause.
Inside the GT CS receives red paddle shifters and instrument panel, with a new centre console - alright, centre console plate - to cover up where your radio and air-con should be. It's going to be warm in there!
For those fortunate US customers, the Competition Series will be offered in Shadow Black, Frozen White, Ingot Silver, Liquid Grey, Liquid Blue and Triple Yellow. Price? Don't be so ridiculous. It will headline the Ford display at the Daytona 500 this weekend. Well worth getting a sit in if you can!
