Nissan GT-R revealed early by magazine front cover

Nissan has unveiled pictures of its new super-sportscar, the GT-R. Or should we say Motor Trend magazine has - by 'accident'.

The front cover of the December issue has been spotted on the shelves in Canada and now the pictures are all over the internet ahead of the imbargo set for Tokyo Motor Show next week.

Nissan says the muscle car is so sophisticated it is training scores of maintenance workers at dealers in Japan to service the vehicle.

A spokesman said: “The GT-R requires special attention because its technology is so advanced.

“It also calls for finesse in salesmanship because the sales representative must deal with customers who are going to be very demanding.”

Nissan is setting up 160 showrooms called 'high-performance centres' around the country for maintenance work on the GT-R.

Nissan has set up a Web page with a countdown clock until the launch to hype the car. GT-R won't be promoted in Japan with any TV ads, which Nissan says are only effective for mass market models.

Apparently, the GT-R boasts a 0-60 of 3.5 seconds, an 11.7-second quarter mile, a 192 mph top speed, and a sub-£40K price.

"After months of spy shots and drip-fed teasers Nissan’s all new GT-R super-coupe has been revealed with the early release of the December issue of MotorTrend. The tagline on the magazine’s cover claims the car is as fast as the Porsche 911 Turbo and is priced less than $80,000, confirming rumors the new GT-R will set a new standard in bang-for-your-buck comparisons.

Other details include the GT-R’s acceleration time of 3.5 seconds for the 0-60mph and 11.7 seconds for the quarter mile. Top speed is claimed to be a staggering 192mph.

Although we still don’t have any official details about the car’s new drivetrain, most are expecting to see a 3.8L V6 engine fed by a pair of turbochargers and mated to a dual-clutch gearbox with the latest ATESSA all-wheel drive setup. The car should measure in at 4,650mm in length and 1,920mm across. There’s rumored to be three different flavors of the new GT-R, starting with a 450hp entry-level model and ranging up to a 530hp flagship. This latter version is expected to be a stripped out racer with plenty of carbon-fiber and a track-tuned suspension.

Stay tuned for the flood of official details and images once the car is revealed at next week’s Tokyo Motor Show."

Certainly does! The front could have been a bit better IMO, round the lights etc.

The figures certainly stand out though...
3.5 0-60mph
11.7 for the 1/4 Mile.
Top speed 192mph!!

Is it an 8-speed gearbox they are using?
IIRC the rumour was that its a 7 Speed DSG style box for the launch and then possibly a 6sp manual at somepoint.

Will this be officially imported to the UK?
Its not been said one way or the other. Middlehursts (the guys who imported the only offical GTR's previously) are taking speculative deposits though.

Its going to be interesting to see how they (Nissan UK) do it though, their dealerships are not really up to the level that someone spending £50k+ would expect!

and I'm a 350z driver so one of their 'targets'.
Are you though?

This costs a fair bit more, its performance is in a totally different ball park too. Id say its aimed more at M3/RS4/911 owners?

Being a fairly young 350z owner yes. In theory people buy into marques so when I'm ready for the next step up I should be looking at the GT-R.

In reality I'll probably be looking at a used R8 / 911 Carrera S in the 60k price bracket.

The latest 350z is 306bhp so the base GT-R won't feel massively quicker. I imagine the track model will be quite trick.

As for the weight of this thing... The 350z is 1600kgs and is a smaller platform, 2 seats, smaller engine etc. I hate to think what this will tip the scales at.
If the talk is to be believed I would say that the performance difference between the new GTR and the Z would be night and day?! Its supposed to be on a par with the 997 TT rather than a Z/Boxster.

If the 1/4 mile time is to be believed then I cant see it being much more than 1500-1600kg region... the time in the article is only 0.1 off the Mclaren F1 time.

Im most curious to see how much it will cost in the UK though. This will be one of the deciding factors on how well it does here. Despite the performance, it wont be looked at as a true 997/R8 alternative, its a Nissan at the end of the day! It needs to be in the £40k-£50k bracket to do well IMO.

I like it.

It will be a miracle if it is under £40k here though...

Cheers,

FT.
If it's $80k in the US....i'd be reckoning on £65-70k here.
If thats the case then we really do live in rip-off Britain!

List price in Japan for the hot version is £37k plus taxes.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's £75k. The R33 GTR was £50k in the mid ninties and the R34 was £54k a few years later, Nissan did sell every single one allocated too.

Doubt we will be seeing 1500bhp monsters as we did with the RB26 cars.
Although I'm sure some bright spark will cram an RB26 into one at some point smile
WHY?!

The RB isn't some miracle engine. If anything the VQ (iirc?) is a better starting point anyway.
