Hi all. Welcome to the first auction report of the New Year and boy was it a busy one!

All of those mince pies and selection boxes over Christmas sent the sugar rushing to the trade buyers' heads and it was 'Buy, buy buy!' all round. The amount of cars which I have shown below showing as 'provisional' is not representative of the sale as a whole; most cars did sell.

All four lanes were running, so I did my best to pop between them and grab info about the best cars.

Coming up soon

Next week, on Tuesday 13th January, they are holding a 200+ car sale on behalf of Toyota/Lexus. So if you're after some nice Jap metal, it may be a sale for you.

Also, don't forget the next Prestige Sale on Tuesday 10th February. Whether you just fancy window-shopping or taking advantage of some very competitive prices for top-end cars, it promises to be a great auction. So that fellow PHers can have a nerdy natter at the same time, would be good for those
attending to have a huddle round a few strong teas; if you're coming but don't know anyone, drop me a
line nearer the time and I'll sort out arranging a 'mini-meet'.

So, onto today's results. As always, I have tried to capture as broad a selection without disappearing into Nissan Notes etc.

To save repeated questions, car prices are marked as:

1. SOLD - you pay this price plus a buyer's premium of 4-5%.

2. Provisional - you are the highest bidder but haven't quite met the reserve. Manheim will try and broker a deal between you an the vendor (either you move up or the vendor moves down). You are bound to buy the car if the vendor moves his reserve down to your bid, but are not bound to offer any extra. (Plus buyer's premium as before)

3. Submit Highest Bid (SMB) - The vendor has not left a reserve but has asked the auction house to submit the highest bid to him for his consideration. You are bound to buy the car if your highest bid is accepted. (Plus buyer's premium as before)

Stupid question from MoP, but what does provisional mean in terms of an auction? The car will sell at the price If the seller agrees as it is around a reserve or something?

some bargains but this looks very expensive

2006 56 Volkswagen Golf 2.0 GT TDi 170 5dr. 122k. £6,900 SOLD

so £7250 by the time you add buyers premium then there's the service and tyres it might need.

Looking at random there are nice sub 50k mile 5 door TDI GT Golfs around at dealers for under £8k.
The 170bhp engine adds the premium. It'll be 140bhp models at 8k.

Good work again V8, I was at an auction today and cars were making powerful money relative to Glasses guide but given how little a lot of this kit books at today then I understand why they appear cheap.
Appear cheap? I thought the reverse was true; seemed like buyers were desperate for anything apart from the very lumpiest stock.

I bumped into a chap I worked with 10 years ago. He works for a Ford main dealer; had come along with 3 colleagues desperate for stock (not just Fords) they could retail between £5000-£7500.

I agree, they are not cheap enough for me, I went looking for five or six and only came back with one but as Tonker rightly points out the percentages against list of many of these cars make them look mega cheap to anyone out of the trade and to be fair they still are compared to what this stuff was booking at six months ago.
yes For sure.

True but there are 170bhp ones out there with less miles from a dealer too, like this at £7249 before haggling. 2004 GT 170 tdi 80k miles with satnav. Sure I could find a lower milage 5 door too.

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/VOLK...
But that's 2 and a half years older and a three door. The Golf today wasn't badly priced. Most are for sale between £11 and £13k with regular miles; that one would fetch top end four figures.

Are you there buying, or is it just somewhere to kill a few hours?
Time killing mainly; I work to suit myself mainly and enjoy the auction buzz (cars or anything else).

Have been using this auction venue for over 20 years; usually buy 2 or 3 cars a year, haven't traded for quite a few years now, but even back then it was always a sideline/hobby rather than career.

Can you obtain a pre sale list for auctions?
Yes, via the Manheim website. But, unlike BCA, Manheim charge for the privilege.

Thanks V8Mate - BCA do charge to searching auctions. £15 for 100 searches withing 2 months.

I'm off to the BMW sale at Nottingham tomorrow. Everyone else please refrain from bidding on the cars I want wink

I'll try and capture a few details while I'm there, although I am seriously intending to buy tomorrow so will be focusing on how the prices are going.
I've never paid for access to auction lists on the BCA website confused

I'm hoping that someone goes to the BCA sale at Bedford tomorrow - would love to know how much the (ultra-)low mileage BMW 760iL goes for.

V8 mate, was the Elise a privately entered car?
It certainly wasn't from a fleet. It was in the first batch of cars which go through each sale: a mix of private, small dealer p/ex, trade clearance etc.

It wasn't perfect. The rear 'deck' of the car (the top bit at the back, before it goes down to the rear lights) needed a good mop at the very least as it was quite badly 'swirled'. The front of the car was covered in snow smile

Overall, I felt it was good value for what it was, though; for me, it's the kind of car which asks you pay for it with the heart rather your head and the latest price guide.

Lot number 5 wasn't it? Those early lots always take a hammering.
Yep. Just rechecked the catalogue and that was a 'submit highest bid' car; so highly likely to have been private sale or member of staff etc.

I'm on my way back from the Nottingham auction. Only got prices of the first half of the lots as I finally bought myself a 730d. The M1 is closed southbound, so I've pulled into a restaurant to catch up on work.

Every car sold (while I was watching) some bargains, some not. I'll do a full rundown with pics in another thread tonight when I'm nice and warm, tucked up in bed! For the time being, here are some highlights...

The Z4M was a lovely car in a quite beautiful Interlagos Blue - with Black Nappa and 11.7k miles reg 03/06 made £17,200. I missed the M3s as I was sorting out payment and collection of my car, but the '08' M3 looked stunning in Jerez Black. The silver 650i Coupe made £21,200 and the '06' convertible made £25,200 which I think was a fantastic price as the car looked in outstanding condition.
What reg was the 650i?

V8, thanks very much for the details on the 350's. That's a great help.

To answer someone elses question about the body kit and wheels on the red 350, they're aftermarket jobbies.
Do you think they may have been fitted by a main dealer though, or do Nissan not offer them?

Just wonderng, as it was Nissan who entered the car into the sale so, if it wasn't an internal car it must have been financed by them. Are you allowed to glue a load of extra 'bits' onto a leased car?
