The "Dub" scene
Discussion
I like old Vw's, Golf's and to a certain extent the Air Cooled stuff but the whole "Dub" thing makes me cringe, someone does something and then they all seem to copy, just been to VW Northwest and there seems to be a few distinct trends,
20 inch Bentley Wheels
A roof rack with all the crap from the back of the garage mounted on it
Tyres that dont fit the wheels.
Sanding all your paint off
I think all these things kind of have their place but there seems to be a lack of subtlety and they
seem to go ott and do all of it, to the same car, just seems so contrived.
Dont get me wrong there were some nice vehicles there but there were a lot of self conciously "scene" cars there when I was hoping for some serious sleepers or interesting conversions but they were thin on the ground.

Im not VAG bashing (though that sounds fun...)
I like VW's, have had a few, mainly Mk1 and Mk2 GTI's and fancy another, Pref a Mk2 with the 20VT transplant as I liked the rawness and usability but dont think 112/139 bhp will do it for me any longer so a standard looking but enhanced car is what I am after, there was nothing I saw that really grabbed me, there was a supercharged MK1 16 valve, one on R1 carbs but it was an innovation desert compared to when I have been before, VR6 engined Lupos, twin engined Golfs etc.
As for the Gols and Polos only being shopping trolleys, what important diplomatic, presedential and humanitarian errands did people run in air cooled VW's ?
I was dissapointed and I know that the other scenes, like the big bodykits, Saxos, bazzed Corsas and that have their own tragic looking heaps, but I kind of expected better with the VW crowd, kind of thought they were a cut above but at the moment I would say that more exciting and original stuff is going on elsewhere.

I dont think some have got my original point, I dont hate VW's or their owners, I just felt that things had taken a strange turn compared to what I remember was happening a few years back. I remember being there and there being a wow factor that was missing for me, maybe its me getting old but I dont think so as I still get it with other stuff.
I suppose, perhaps the new styles, Rat look and some of the other stuff might be more prevalent as there is less money about these days, its easy and cheap to do.
I counted three cars on Bentley rims, the Eos and a couple of others, a Passat I think was one, the Eos appeared to not have tyres just a layer of black paint, one of them was light blue with the rims painted in the same colour, did look quite good.
I was kind of hoping that there was something worth buying in the for sale section but nothing grabbed me.

I quite fancied that guards red 964 in the for sale section but was a bit out of my price range.Edited by J4CKO on Monday 9th August 11:16
There was a tidy Scirocco for £600/1100 with some big wheels.

I don't see the point in model train sets or collecting beer cans, but i don't start threads to moan about people that do it.
The thing is, this is a Web Forum, I post to start a debate, if we all just thought like that, there wouldnt be any debate, if you drive a car to a show to show it you can reasonably expect an opinion from "middle aged whingers".2. Its their money

I can safely say I never did anything I am really embarassed about to a car, my MK1 1.6 GTI was pristine when I was 19 (in 1990), repainted black, part retrimmed, wheels refurbed, subtle lowering, better tyres etc, ok the rear lip spolier and Demon Tweeks sticker might not pass muster nowadays but nothing too heinous. Not that I am any arbiter of taste but I know that a load of old tat on the roof is not a good idea !
My main gripe was that ther didnt seem to be the technical innovation there once was, it seemed to have got a bit stagnant, cant help feeling a bit dissapointed, there wasnt that much to fire the enthusiasm.
For an example, nip over to Retro Rides and check out "Adaptormans" Caddy, bit rought around the edges but inspirational.
I like that blue Golf, perhaps a little bit shiny for my tastes but very nice.
I think someone summed it up about the tick list of things to do to a car, sometimes less is more, a little bit of stretch, slight and subtle rat hints but some go over the top so deperate are they to "belong". Its the same with fashion, one of the kids mates came round and had obviously discovered fashion, beanie Cap, labels on everything and his underpants displayed some way above his trousers like he had been ticking stuff off a list, prehaps we dont learn subtle or "less is more" until we get older.
Patina is great, one of the coolest cars I have ever seen was an unrestored and well used but roadworthy big vintage saloon (20's or 30's, cant remember the model), with Heath Robinson modifications probably done in the 40's or 50's, original scuffed paint, period (from many periods) add ons, it just worked and looked so laid back and charming next to the "Dont Touch" shined to perfection, better than factory brigade, you can still care for a car without making it look like a new one, this thing reeked of history wheras a lot of the others just seemed like factory fresh examples, there is a place for all of them and it would be boring if they were all the same but I thin patina needs to grow natrually or be very carefully and thoughtfully contrived, otherwise it looks as convincing as a Sunday Supplement "genuine" WW2 leather flying jacket or pre aged jeans.
So, to sum up, keep it subtle, dont try to do too much on one car and dont go over the top on any one thing.

Jesus, what have I started !
I love VW's but my point was and still is, I was dissapointed at the relative lack of innovation compared to previous years at VW Northwest and that there seemed to be a lot of similar cars, I was hoping for some inspiration for my own project, thats inspiration by the way, not creating a facsimile.

Sometimes it seems that the "offended" in this thread are missing my original sentiment, I am in fact on the lookout for a new "Dub".
There seems to be a bit of "Daffyd", The only Dubber in the village going on.
It is constructive criticism and interest, not hatred.
Now find me a Mk2 Golf with a 1.8 T, Or Corrado, potentially something with a forced induction VR6, no flush tailgates, no lairy paint, no Raleigh Chopper on the roof must be solid and well converted, subtle exterior mods ok and convince my wife its a good idea to buy it as she is a dub-sceptic at the moment.

Just trying to get myself into a position to buy, i.e. my car sold, cash to fund the difference, slow going with having three kids, two other cars and a wife that is less than keen on my motoring whims, despite spending 3 grand herself last year on a manky old Fiat 500 which muggins has spent many a happy hour fixing up, slight element of hypocrisy ! but it will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine.
Tjere was one on here, lovely red one for sale by someone called Mush I think but I think thats gone, current object of my desire is this, http://www.edition38.com/forums/index.php?showtopi...
especially with the wheels in the earlier pictures, love the BBS RS's but they are a bit bling for me, that car looks stunning though, even though its LHD, needs a roofrack with an old rusty barbecue, a dead Alsation, a tailfin off a Boeing 747 SP and Tredle Sewing Machine on top to give it its crowning glory
See these guys, pioneers of the Dub scene looking for that elusive perfect item for the roof rack,

Yes, have seen MK2's with A/C, but to be honest I dont want it, I drive mine so little its something else to lug round and break, less weight the better in a MK2, I prefer them without PAS for the full
experience, maual windows as well as the electric ones were generally crap.
As for over 200 bhp on MK2 brakes, I sometimes wondered about them with 112 with 200 plus new brakes are a necessity, as is decent suspension, a limited slip diff, strut braces and the realisation that
if you get it wrong there are no electronics to bail you out and the crash protection isnt exactly 5 star but I am hoping to get one, also hoping to get one with over 250, I want something really really quick and a ton of MK2 with 250 plus bhp should do it, my current Saab has about that but weights 1500 kilos and has a dual mass flywheel and drive by wire throttle, the ecu backs the power off in first and second to preserve the drivetrain and avoid torque steer which I hate, am thinking that this would be a good combination of the old and the new and cant see why it wouldnt be very reliable and massive fun, real sleepers.
The Performance calculator predicts this, for one with 280 bhp, possibly a bit optimistic but still it will be bloody quick,
Power at Flywheel (BHP) : 280
Weight without Driver (KG) : 1000
Power to Weight Ratio (BHP Per Ton) : 284.50
0 - 60 (Secs) : 4.62
0 - 100 (Secs) : 10.68
60 - 100 (Secs) : 6.06
Quarter Mile (Secs) : 12.94
Terminal Speed (MPH) : 110.05
Drag Strip Quarter Mile (Secs) : 12.74
Drag Strip Terminal Speed (MPH) : 112.09
experience, maual windows as well as the electric ones were generally crap.

I've been in a few 20vT Mk2's and I really dont have any desire to go that quickly in a Mk2 again, a full cage would be a must for me.
Sounds prudent and I like the fact it was brisk enough for you what kind of power was it running if you dont mind me asking, there are a few circa 200 bhp and I appreciate that is quite a bit in a mk2 but when I do it I dotn want to think I could do with more, there was one with a reported 400 bhp (on a standard box !), all internals done and a Garrett turbo which I think may be overkill !ManOpener said:

just needs RS's :P
nah, looks the tits. i love that issure of PPC.
buy it an take me out for a spin, i reeeeeeeeeally want a 20vt mk2...
anyone at Edition 38 X this weekend?
It has RS's in the later pictures, would love to buy it but I need to sell mine and raise the difference, then convince the missus, I am thinking I will one way or another get one but it may take 12 months, have a policy maturing around this time next year as well so perhaps will have to wait.
There is a 325 bhp Corrado with a Garrett turbo 1.8 T just appeared on here for 7 grand, the Corrado is another option, as is a MK1, but it is down to the individual car, there is as tunner on ed 38 but it has an interior that though very well done is alledgedly Blackberry in colour shows up and Monkey Bum Pink in photos.
Would love a spin in one myself just to confirm it is what I expect and not some rattly old deathtrap, sometimes time is not kind.
