Is it just me or do folk get way too excited about RWD.

Anything that is RWD and folk are getting excited and jumping around like kids. Apparently anything with RWD is a wonderful car.

People are even getting excited about volvo 340s the hideous volvo renault crossbreed which i have driven and found it to be wallowly bucket.

This is the wonderful ssangyong odious its RWD is this really better then any FWD car?

Would people rather drive this then a Lotus Elan?

OP great question, can see a 20 pager coming up!

Its a matter of preference I think, I personally much prefer a RWD, especially in a more powerful car as in my opinion theres no worse feeling than understeer when you get on the power too early!

J

So you would prefer the odious then

Ha ha!! I didn't say that did I. I do agree with what your saying there though, a car like that doesn't need to be rear wheel drive.

J
But its is RWD so it must be absolutely awesome to drive. Surely that kind of car being RWD must be so much better

You can't compare good FWD cars to crap RWD cars.
But thats the whole point.

People look at utterly crap RWD cars and think they are brilliant.

I'm sure someone has discovered the odious is RWD and is now considering one as their new family bus and are dreaming of it drifting perfectly from schoolgate to tescos.

I asked about a decent handling FWD shed and i was recommended a Sierra instead of a Focus. I've driven a Sierra and it was the return of mr Blobby my current FWD shed is a far better car to drive.

BTW, has no-one looked at the OP's garage.

you all got trolled...
Explain please

How my current cars. A ford focus shed, a caterham and 2 landrovers mean i'm a troll?

I suppose you have looked at the caterham and have immediately worshipped at the alter of RWD. While ignoring the light weight, mid engined, decent suspension, low centre of gravity, excellent steering, tiny sticky wheels that make it a good drivers car.

RWD is part of what makes a car decent but things such as lightweight and decent suspension set-up etc make far more influence.

You know that those photos could easily be replaced with, for example, a V8 supercar and some FWD shopping trolley/white goods appliance? wink
Of course

But the Tata Nano is more exciting then all FWD cars according to the RWD fans.

Hell its even rear engined so it must be just as good to drive as any 911 turbo

So why has the volvo 340 series gone from the car your granny would be driving to the ultimate drift machine.

An apprentice at work had a volvo 340 as one of his dream cars but he was a moron

It would be interesting to hear if any of the FWD evangelists have actually owned RWD cars? Goes back to my earlier point that FWD is good these days. Good enough for the blinkers to stay well and truly on.

But if anyone who has blinkers its the "it must be RWD crowd"

Still waiting for ANY FWD super car you care to mention?
So because there are no FWD supercars then by your logic all RWD cars must be supercars including the Ssanyong Rodious

you obviously have never owned a rwd car.

Even if your RWD car is slow and handles poorly, FWD is also inferior from a mechanical perspective in terms of simplicity, durability and ease of maintenance
Oh do please explain

Oh do please explain
FWD = weak halfshafts, more strain on the drivetrain and easier to break
So how is the power transmitted to the rear wheels in RWD if there are no halfshafts?

Also RWD has more oil seals to leak due to the diff at the back, the prop shaft has more bits to cause hassle etc.

The reason that RWD cars are easier to work on is that most older cars are RWD and they have huge spaces around the engine. This is more due to the cars age then its RWD layout

No, it's due to the fact that the engine is mounted correctly, with the gearbox behind it, not all shoe-horned into the engine bay with the gearbox squashed up against the side of the chassis! laugh
After owning a modernish RWD car I invite you to play a game with a BMW diesel

Spot the turbo

Its down there somewhere but no human can reach it without removing half the engine

I think RWD is massively over hyped, especially on here. There are plenty of threads about people wanting their first RWD car as if its some monster that is definitely going to kill them, then that idea is reinforced by the REAL MAN club who suggest they start in a base-spec MX-5 because you couldn't possibly control their mid-range BMW (which they drive everywhere sideways, obviously).

Its all bks. I think most people wouldn't know the difference unless the car had enough power to spin the wheels.
This is what annoys me is the whole REAL MAN club who suggest anyone who doesn't think that every single RWD car is something that only REAL MEN can handle as they are so incredibly dangerous. Anyone who doesn't agree that every single RWD car is a man killer has never driven a RWD car.

RWD is way overhyped

I own a caterham and i bought it because it drives fantastically not because it is RWD and the reason it drives fantastically is more to do with it weighing 500Kg then what wheel drive it is.

So could the REAL MAN club please get into their BMW 316i and bugger off

Why has the Volvo 340 become a drift weapon? -Because it is one of very few fairly well-built, cheap rwd cars still available.
The only volvo bits left is the bloody grill

When it came out the factory it was a bit crap

The only person with an irrational attitude towards low powered rwd cars is you. Most people with such rwd cars actually have no idea what rwd means, let alone even realise the drive could change the handling.
Its not the cars that bother me.

Its the REAL MEN who will say that a BMW will immediately slice your head off while propelling you backwards (on fire) through a brickwall if you even look at the throttle the wrong way. Women and anyone who isn't a REAL MAN should be banned from driving the dangerous monster that is a BMW 318i.

If 80% of 1 series owners don't even know they are RWD then one would say that the RWD bit hasn't had the huge amount of difference to the whole experience.

Basically RWD is over hyped by the macho fkwits.

I don't see a single post in 9 pages of this topic where anyone has said driving a RWD car makes them more of a man? It is simply a case of them being far more rewarding & fun!
In this thread nope

In many other threads

Yep

The only thing I will say is, for average Joe, it is a LOT easier to get yourself into trouble in a decent RWD car than it is in a FWD one.
Well that proves my point nicely
