A local vicar has approached me believing I am some sort of car expert.

He needs a new car to fulfil the following criteria:

2.5-3.5k
2003 oldest max
Estate/Hatch to carry 4 in comfort
Not too big (no massive estates!)
Ideally auto (suffers from leg pains)
Fuel / performance / MPG not that important
Must be reliable and reasonable to run.

I suggested Passat 1.9TDI Estate Auto, Focus' etc but not to au fait on the autos on these, if the above was my criteria I would buy a 6 or 8 cyl wafter which he does not want!

Over to you...!

Can't help but feel sorry for OP. One of those topics that you just know isn't going to turn out quite the way they wanted.

What about a car for a Vicar's wife?
Hey, I knew what this would descend into and finding it entertaining reading...keep up the good work!

Good call on the Fabia's. I hope he isn't a snobby vicar.

Personally I would definitely not suggest he bought a diesel when only doing 3,000 miles per year.

Astra 1.8 Auto (proper auto not semi)would be a good choice. Value for money and pretty reliable.
Not all vicar's do 3,000 miles pa! He will be doing about 12,000 including high percentage of very short journeys, and some regularly massive trips to visit the family.
