'Intelligent' Speed Cameras On The Way

Highways Agency plans multi-million pound splurge on new camera systems

GATSO could become just a fond memory
GATSO could become just a fond memory
The Highways Agency plans to roll out new 'intelligent' speed cameras with a host of new tricks to put the brakes on speeding drivers - including the ability to cover multiple lanes simultaneously.

The new cameras also don't flash, meaning many drivers won't realise they've been 'done' until the fateful letter appears on the doormat. They'll also be able to differentiate between lorries and cars, enabling them to enforce lower speed limits for trucks.

We don't know how much of our cash the Agency intends to spend on this 'intelligent' camera scheme, or even why they think it is good value for the taxpayer. Either way, it would have been nice if they'd asked us motorists, as we're the ones paying all their bills!

What we can tell you, is that the Highways Agency has also revealed plans to spend a whopping £58 million on new dedicated cameras that will measure your average speed on motorways. In a 'tender notice', the Agency says the primary objective will be to enforce motorways with variable and temporary speed limits, but once the units are approved by the Home Office, who knows where they'll pop up next...

It all smacks of a major Highways Agency 'job justification scheme' to us. Roll on the revolution!

I give it 5 years until its rolled out and then another 2 years until its ripped out again as accidents wont go down, fines will go through the roof and there will be a revolt.

So in a way it may be a good thing if it stops us all being so apathetic toward this totalitarian government.

It takes unity to stop things like this happening - Either we all stop paying for them (stop paying taxes) or we just destroy them when they pop up! shoot On a more serious note - oh wait, I am being serious hehe

No replacement for traffic cops mingling in unmarked cars to catch bad drivers, not just those who speed...

The ability to distinguish between cars and trucks, and the plans to introduce GPS tachographs will bring untold misery to every NSL commuter / commercial road across the country. There is an unwritten rule of the road that commercials don't stick to their legal 40mph on these roads ....

Just imagine the queues of traffic when they have no choice? A commercial will be followed (bumper to bumper without room for progression through overtaking "hops") my miles of cars and vans that are unable to get anywhere near the 60mph limit as they travel in procession at 40mph. Hell? IMO, yes!
