Audi S5 Sportback Revealed

First official pictures of the 'sportiest' Sportback

Another Audi, another S model. This time it's the turn of the A5 Sportback, which will be shown at Frankfurt later this month with a meaty 329bhp motor.

Power comes from Audi's three litre supercharged V6, and with 325lb ft of torque delivered between 2,900 and 5,300rpm performance should be typically punchy. Audi quotes a 0-62mph time of 5.4secs with an electronically limited 155mph maximum, and also boasts that the car's combined economy figure of 29.1mpg is the best in its class.

The S5 Sportback comes with a seven-speed S tronic dual clutch transmission with quattro all wheel drive, but if you ask nicely they'll also fit the 'torque-vectoring' sport differential which distributes power on the rear axle between the wheels to help maximise traction.

The car comes with sportier suspension settings, and rides on 18 inch alloys with 245/40 tyres. The S5 logo appears on the brake calipers, as well as on the nose and tail, and there's not a great deal else to to distinguish the car visually from the outside. Inside, you get to luxuriate in Silk Nappa leather luxury on a pair of electrically adjustable sports seats.

UK sales start in the the Spring next year, but UK prices have not been finalised yet. However the base price in Germany will be 57,900 Euros which xe.com works out at £51,116.

It comes to something, when the only interesting statistic a new Audi S-car launch can throw up is fuel consumption...

Too slow, too expensive, too contrived.

Come on Audi.

Is it even a hatch or not? Failing to get excited about this A4 with a funny rear end I must admit.

Yep, didn't post any pictures of that rear end did they?

I like the A/S4 and the A/S5, but this is just ridiculous.

Don't know, but it didn't bother me when mercedes made the CLS...

One of the first things I do when I drive a new Audi is Vehicle Settings/Lighting/Chavy Running Lights/Off.

The smooth plastic interior in the A5 reminds me of the Mk2 Seat Leon for some reason. The overall feel is cheap. As for reliability, go check WhatCar for a shocker!

Another Audi that will be inexplicably popular in the UK. Vastly overpriced and overrated.

And those running lights are truly horrendous. Heard them described as making an Audi look " like a council house at Christmas ".

The only good thing is the V8 engine.

It's nice...but it's not £51k worth of nice!

If that is the list price, the Insignia VXR will be a full £20,000 cheaper (and this gap will increase once you add options to the Audi and take the inevitable discount from the Vauxhall's RRP). Not only that, but for £50-odd thousand, you could be looking at some serious used metal: We're talking IS-F/M3/M5/RS4 etc. here - And I don't think the S5 can compete with that...!

Still; once it's depreciated to sensible levels, it'll no doubt make a nice car for some of us.

Is it me? I`m just not interested in this? As stated it`s too expensive ( I would have worn it if it still had the fabulous V8), too formulaic and will be coming up against some serious rivals once you`ve added the usual extras. Give me a late model used RS4 and some change for trackdays.

Looks better than a Panamera (porsche - not the hat!).

Other than that, I dont see the point. Isn't a 4 door audi saloon an A4? This is an A4 with the boot hinge in a different place. 50k for it!!! - M5 6 months old with 7k on the clock is 5k + cheaper. This makes no sense.

Isn't that basically an A4? What's the difference apart from price?

I am confused! All these niche models, what's what?

I can't help but think that at some point in the future a new head of Audi is going to say 'We make far too many variations, we will go back to our core market models.'

Very boring styling. Look like a kind of mix of the A6 and A4.

I don't think this will sell well (at least in S form). 51k - this or an M3... No contest.
