Brawn F1 Looking Strong

New team on good form in first test at Barcelona

The Brawn F1 team is returning from yesterday’s final Barcelona test day brimming with confidence after Jensen Button set the fastest time in the new outfit’s ’09 car.

Button’s 1:19.127 around the Spanish circuit was more than one second faster than Felipe Massa’s Ferrari.

While test times are not a true indicator of race competitiveness - especially as Brawn F1 needs to pull out all the stops to impress any potential sponsors – Button’s sterling ‘P1’ performance will help to confound critics who thought the former Honda outfit’s days were numbered.

According to trackside reports, Button completed a full race distance in the new car yesterday, including pit stops. The team also simulated qualifying and evaluated various set-ups.

‘After all the challenges we have faced, to come here and get such an encouraging start is just what we needed. All that effort paid off, and everyone can feel very proud,’ said Button, who earlier this week told Autosport that his Brawn F1 drive felt like a chance to start his career all over again.

Speaking in the middle of the three day test, team principal Ross Brawn claimed to be unsurprised by his car’s performance.

‘It’s 15 months work. We said we would sacrifice last year to concentrate on this car, and what you see is what we said we would do. So it is perfectly rational in my mind,’ he said.

What might not seem quite so rational now, particularly in Tokyo, is the decision by Honda to axe its F1 participation in the first place – especially as rival Toyota is also showing strongly in testing and threatening its best season yet.

Excellent, it would be funny if the team did really well this year just as Honda pull out!

I hadn't realised how bad F1 cars looked nowadays, with huge front and tiny rear spoilers: it looks like a carpet sweeper!

Good luck to them, though.

Excellent news, I just hope that kind of pace can be transformed into race pace, as I do think that JB is a capable driver and much better than being a tail end charlie

I ahd always heard that Honda were holding the team back anyway - the bureaucratic ways of a massive japanese conglomerate just did not allow the team the flexibilty it needed to be competitive

I hope Jenson gets his chance to be competitive again.

The Brawnda is one of the better looking cars as well. Take a look at the Renault or BMW if you want to lose your eyesight properly smile

I thought the same at first, but they look much better when flying around the track

Button for world champion?! Brawn F1 could provide him the car to do very well indeed. Nice to see an independent team beat the big boys.

This is great news, and good on Brawn and Button for a sterling performance so far. I think it's great to see other F1 teams make there way to the top of the field, to be honest I am sick of seeing Ferrari and Mclaren winning all the time.

Nice if it would happen but highly unlikely. Good to see them on the grid.

BMW may have something to say about that too this year...

F1 has got boring over the years. Too many rules and regs to follow, its starting to limit what they can do with the car? I mean how bad would it be to say "look, its got to have 4 wheels, run on 98 RON fuel, go nuts"

I recon we would see some rather crazy cars come back, just like the old days biggrin There's nothing new in motorsport these days, everyone follows similar design styles, everything has to have the same engine/gearbox etc. I want to see some originality!

Wouldnt it be funny if Brawn finished the season higher than Ferrari.

stoopid honda:

1. buy a competitive team at top dollar
2. impose crap management
3. remove sponsorship, replace with "my earth dream"
4. invest millions trying to make a half decent 2009 car
5. attempt to give away team before 2009 testing gets underway

This is great news, however, if you scratch below the surface should we be surprised.

Who was one of the most important factors of Michael Schumachers career, and why was MS so keen to ensure that the man came with him from Bennetton?

Ross Brawn I believe is the key!

Remember that although Ross joined Honda last year, it was not his car. While the race team travelled backwards on the grid during racing, Ross was soley focussed on the 2009 chassis. Despite all the news since Honda pulled out, the team have never stopped their work at the factory, OK so they may not have had the opportunity to go testing in Jan/Feb, but they certainly were not sitting still at Brackley.

Ross is one of those guys who seems to inspire the best in everyone around him. He might not be a loud character to those of us who watch F1 on the box, but I've always admired his presence and I think it is that presence that will see BrawnGP become a serious force in 09. OK so they may not win the championship, but I would be very surprised if they don't win a race or two with Button behind the wheel.

It really looks like the talking needs to stop now on Button, he's got the equipment and Ross behind him, there will be no excuses now.

I can't wait for the first race...
