Cadillac Converj Coupe Gets Green Light

Range extender coupe should make production, but it'll be quite a wait

The dramatic Cadillac Converj coupe concept has been given the green light for production by General Motors.

According The Detroit News, the range-extender petrol-electric hybrid - which was first shown at the 2009 Detroit motor show - will hit show rooms, but not for several years.

Instead, GM will concentrate first on getting the smaller Chevrolet Volt and Vauxhall/Opel Ampera models to market - as the Converj will share much of its smaller siblings' technology - and these are due in late 2010, early 2011.

The higher margins that Cadillac's premium positioning will afford the Converj help the Cadillac make financial sense as it would spread the cost of the expensive lithium ion technology - GM has already spent more than $1bn USD on the Chevrolet Volt programme.

General Motors has not yet made an official statement concerning the future of the Converj, but the car is unlikely to make it to the UK even if it does make it to production.

Quite a looker for an American car,i was getting tired of them over doing the whole retro design phaze so this makes a nice change. The only part that doesn't quite suit the car is the traditional Caddy grill.

Yep, good effort!

Would be good to see GM a bit more stable as a company in the near future. I'm sure the $1 bn development didn't help along with all the pensions they're paying at the moment.

Looks like a cross between an updated Celica and a Gallardo.

I like it.

+1, thats exactly what I thought, but the grill is a bit too HUGE for my personal taste!

Reminds me of this, they bought out a few years back...

I quite like this, and is a better than usual american effort. If i had one niggle, it would be the Prius-like lights. But still wouldn't say no.

Note to Cadillac:

If you'd brought out this car with a petrol engine, instead of the cruddy BLS, people would have bought it. It's a real looker, this car but will have to reserve judgement until we see the production version though the Chevy Vlt seems to have made the leap and the Americans are much better at getting their concepts into metal without destroying them (Jag take note).

Looks like just a Celica to me. Not that I dislike it, the last Celica was a lovely looking car, it was a shame there was not a GT4 version.

Stunning - very modern and radical. It looks like it's been beamed back to us from the next century!

Loving that. Lets hope they keep to the concept and hope they also find time to squeeze a V8 in there for the range topper

I prefer the one you've recovered from the past.

That was my first thought, perhaps with a hilt of Alfa GTV in the odd crease down the side - pretty good effort on the styling front. It'll be interesting to see if they can make it drive well with all the weight that it will no-doubt have to carry around.

umm not to sure on this one, think (hope) it would look better in person. To me it a looks a bit awkward and certainly wouldn't win any beauty contents.

I like them both but the older mid engine car is stunning. I had the chance to see this "car" in the lobby of a GM building in Detroit. It was only a styling exercise but is was really a beautiful shape.
