Camaro Heads For 500bhp

GM are testing a new engine for use in the Camaro


The new Chevrolet camaro looks set to recieve a 6.2 litre direct injection V8 which turns out 500bhp. The engine is a spin-off from the Cadillac Escalade aluminium Vortec unit. It is currently being tested by General Motors in an Escalade, according to Ward's Auto.

The new engine would deliver a 10 per cent increase in low end torque as well as the horsepower jump. GM have been working on small block alloy engines for some time and this one features eight fuel injectors which run straight into the side of the combustion chamber, and deliver fuel at massive pressure.

It looks like they have event put spinner on where the dials should be.

Lost its charm.

Wonder why they didn't use Corvette LS7 motor? Ain't a bad thing to have yet another stonking motor in the stable I guess.

6.2 ltr and 500bhp not so efficient really, just about 80bhp per litre could do better compare to an European engine

80bhp per litre is not bad for what the car is supposed to be - a US "muscle" with plenty of torque...and not a high reving machine like the vtech. I think they have deffinatelly improved.

80bhp/l from a 2 valve engine is great. Specific output is pretty meaningless anyway. There's more than one way to crack a nut. See David Yu's column about the Z06 engine vs the F430.

Sounds like very good power from an American V8 to me. They've come a long way from 170bhp 5.0l V8 Mustang's and the like.

Either that or woefully misinformed.

I'm a VTEC-head and I rather like the sound of this engine (and will probably like the way it sounds too, as it's a GM V8).

Very impressive achievement from GM, really throws the gauntlet down to Ford for their new 'big' V8 and the Chrysler Hemi. For me it knocks a few 'premium' euro engines noses out of joint too!

May have to get one when I move to the US next year, especially as I'm no longer a Ford man!

This whole efficiency discussion is getting a little tiring, I am guessing it stems from the belief that larger engines equals worse fuel economy which in most cases is true. But does a race tuned 4ish litre v8 really use that much less fuel than a lazier 6ish litre v8 on a daily basis for simular outputs?

Can't see this, there's the 6.2 Ltr LS3 engine being used in the Corvette from next year seems daft not to use this.

It'll be the base engine in the C7 I believe.

I like modern engine, but theres nothing that beats a big capacity V8 in a nice state of tune; its not all about peak horsepower, the delivery is what makes you smile from ear to ear.
