Gumpert Goes For 'Ring Record

German supercar beats GT-R and ZR-1, but still trails Radical

The Nurburgring 'road car' lap-time battle has swung into the spotlight once more, as German supercar maker Gumpert has sent its Apollo Sport model round the Nurburgring Nordschleife in a claimed 7min 11sec.

This revelation comes less than a week after the US-built Devon GTX was spotted lapping the 'Ring with the aim of beating Radical's 2005 record of 6m 55s, set in an SR8.

Although Gumpert appears to be claiming a road-car lap record, they appear to have overlooked the Radical SR8's achievement, as that car is fully road legal too. Still, the Gumpert's time is nevertheless pretty impressive, beating the Nissan GT-R (7m 28s), the Corvette ZR-1 (7m 26s) and even the Viper ACR (7m 22s).

Close, but no Radical-beater...
Close, but no Radical-beater...
Mind you, the Gumpert that lapped the Nordschleife on 13 August with 26-year-old Florian Gruber at the wheel was producing 700bhp from its 4.2-litre, twin-turbo, mid-mounted Audi V8...

SR8 is only road legal in the UK as far as I know (or on an case by case basis), it doesn't have any type approoval, that's what make gumpert claim valid anywhere but in the UK. wink

Wasn't the SR8 lap on non-road legal tyres or something? I'm sure there was some reason why it was discounted.

Still, all these cars are going round ever faster, which is impressive - but what's really impressive is the drivers. You'd have to not only be amazingly talented and know the track like the top of your knob, but have balls of steel as well.

Pretty sure it was on CR500's which are legal. It'd have been much faster on slicks. I am curious though as to whether it used the high downforce pack or the road legal one... If it was the road legal kit too, then really, you can't discount it. It passed the same SVA that a Caterham would have.

Thats a very impressive car and equally the drive! its a bit bigger than the radical and as we saw from the Stigs top gear lap in a Gumpert it can be a bit of a handfull on the limit im suprised the driver could fit his balls in the seat!.

It would probably be helpful if people were to ignore the Radical's "record".
Being "road legal" (the "fully" bit is meaningless) is totally different from being a "road car". We all know that the SR8 is a racing car.
Maybe the Gumpert is really a racing car too. With that ride height, I doubt that the car could even go to the Dottinger Hohe ED station to refuel.

good for them, and I see the gumpert more of a road car the cars with no roof...or single seaters.

a road car has to have some comfort things...like a normal window and a roof soft/hard and 2 seats and road legal tires and a front shield and a heater with blower.

Too bad the world expand just slightly over the UK borders then! tongue out Here you can put some caterham legally on the raod, not all (same applies to most EU country) however and SR8, no but a gumpert is a road legal car anywhere wink

GTR720 is no more road legal in many EU countries that the SR8

Perfectly legal to drive it outside those borders though provided it's registered, and legal within them.

What defines a "road car" is a little woolly in that case though, isn't it? Many cars used daily have trouble with speed bumps for example.

Ahh, that would explain why I saw both of the above cars at the Nurburgring on Friday. I followed the green/silver one for a few miles towards Adenau, what an amazing machine!

I am pretty sure all the German car manu's only consider a car 'road legal' if its TUV approved, which is sort of a German MOT. I don't think any Euro magazines ever considered a Caterham road legal.

Have you seen how they drive in France? It'd be suicidal to own a Caterfield or Radical there anyhow. Maybe it's difficult for your own protection...?

If so then I'm with you, 50bhp could've made a lot of difference to a car set up that well. especially when tackling 'The Ring'
