Land Rover Enjoys Record Sales

Land Rover sales break through the 200,000 barrier for first time ever

Despite Land Rover’s troubles of late the car maker has just announced record sales.

The firm announced today that it broken through the 200,000 sales barrier for the first time in its 59 year history.

Global sales of Land Rovers reached 205,717 in November, 27 per cent ahead of the same month last year.

This puts the company on course for its third successive record sales year.

The fact that Land Rover, along with Jaguar, is in the process of being sold by Ford doesn’t appear to be putting off buyers.

An announcement is expected very soon about the sale following final bids from India's Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra and private equity firm One Equity Partners.

Land Rover's managing director, Phil Popham, said of the latest sales figures: ‘This is a significant milestone in Land Rover's history and puts us on a firm footing as we approach our 60th anniversary.

‘Confidence is high – we're firmly in the black with innovative new products that will continue Land Rover's sustainable development.’

Joking aside, its the only 4x4 I'd ever consider owning. I think they're fantastic. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.(Don't suppose that really stands up though because apparently they break down a lot!). But still, its the only one I'd have - one of the coolest cars you can buy IMHO.

I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole. We have four Defenders where I fly and they are all under 2 years old with less than 5000 miles on the clock.

So far we have had:

  • Two door handles falling off under normal use
  • Trim falling off
  • Numerous electrical failures
  • Diff lock selector completely jam in low range on two of them
  • Other stuff I can't remember
If they were my own vehicles, I would have sent them back and bought a Toyota Land Cruiser or Nissan Patrol ages ago.

Also, Land Rover service has been painfully slow.

The older Defenders and series models were practically unstoppable. The new ones are unreliable cheaply made pieces of cr@p.

Think you'll find the Disco's and Range Rovers are vulnerable to reliability but with the Freelander (Honda based, I thought) they have a good line up which is why the bidding is on. Is Jaguar being lumped in to get shot of it with a company (LR) worth buying.

Having just bought another Discovery and my brother another new shape Defender. They are very good vehicles. Yes you will have people who don't have a great experience but this is the same for any manufacturer and are quite rare now.

The newer discoverys are now very reliable.

Give Renault a try, that will recalibrate you're crap-o-meter. Once you've dealt with a Renault service departments, things like rootcanals, cancer and divorce just seem like a walk in the park on a sunny day, apparently IMHOranting.

Had a call from them last thursday asking if I could pop back in because they'd found some bolts in the workshop that they'd taken off my car on the monday....mad

'lumped in'?

Are you suggesting that Land Rovers are better built, more reliable cars than Jaguars?

I beg to differ!

Agree in principle, but you have just bought the new ones. I think they have recently become very bad, so let's revisit this thread in two years. If they are still problem free, good for you! If not, I am not surprised.

In sort of defense of Land Rover, our Defenders are normally only used on weekends and are put in and out of low range alot, however, you would expect so much better.

There is no excuse for he cheapy door handles falling off two of them though. That's very poor.

What misguided management Ford does have: giving away its prized assets. The premium sector in which both Jaguar and LandRover reside will only get bigger and more profitable.

My experience is that I'm on my third and apart from a few bulbs, and consumables a clutch and a cooling pipe they have covered approx 300Kmiles both on and off road. Totally dependable, certainly better than my Audi.

Just my experience though, when funds permit another will be on the way

Have a Defender 110 Td5 and covered 60.000 miles without a major problem. Guess, a lot of people don't know how drive and maintain such a vehicle properly. It's obvious, if you try to change high low under full speed at one stage it's over, same when u put on 35 inch tires and an airlocker at the rear axle you make 10 yards up a steep hill and one half shaft will break. But I agree, the finish could be better and think the 2007 model made a big step in the right direction - Defender forever

Ive owned an XS defender 56 reg for just over a year now and have done 34,000 miles in it
its used to trailer my cars to and from trackdays and the Nurburgring - my missus loves it so the the kids
you can throw anything in it
Ive had 2 G-Wagens before but the Land Rover has that little bit extra grin factor
and because it has 9 seats I dont pay congestion charge

Great car and well worth getting one

yes I suspect they're a bit desperate for cash so need to flog a profitable/prestige marque or two to cover their core business.

I beg to differ. With the exception of the Freelander/X-Type Halewood plant (and some admin), the two marques are made totally seperately and the quality levels are miles apart.

The levels of build/reliability on the Land Rovers just can't compete with Jaguar, and they know it.

Bought new XS 110 Defender in July 06, Done 12k miles a little light off road stuff and not a single problem.
I am well happy with it..simple..basic-ish, it should last for years. Keep the under body proctected and serviced..should do 250k easy.
And if anything falls of just bolt it back on..ITS A DEFENDER!!!!
