RE: Mercedes C63 AMG testing vid
Wednesday 6th August 2014

There's a lot riding on the upcoming Mercedes C63 AMG. All who have experienced the old car have come away captivated, the latest BMW M3 is excellent and it needs to prove the new 'hot V' V8 is an adequate replacement for the M156. No pressure then.

Four prototypes do skids and make noise on the Nordschleife. Excited yet?

This new testing video should allay any concerns that may exist. AMG had largely proved already with the 5.5-litre E63 that turbos are no hindrance to some proper V8 rumble and that is again the case here. Some forced induction is detectable but there's also no doubt about the cylinder configuration. The video description suggest a few of the cars sound different; they all make a pretty good noise from here, the obligatory overrun crackles particularly enjoyable.
Furthermore, the C63 looks quick. Really quick. The majority of this video features the saloon and you'll see it look pretty rapid through the Hatzenbach section in particular. See also the composure at Flugplatz from 1:45. Obviously it will oversteer as well, most clearly evidenced out of the mini Karussell at 3:00.
The new C63 is expected to be shown at the LA show in November so expect further details to emerge before then. Suffice to say we'll keep you updated with every single update possible!

I saw a display thing at Mercedes World Brooklands, it had E63 and CLS63 (5.5 Turbo V8s) and the C63 with it's proper N/A 6.2. The noise wasn't comparable in the slightest. The Turbos were almost silent by comparison.
That 6.2 V8 C63 is a proper halo car. Nothing like it will ever be built againt.

Hmmm, to me the dominant noise is that of tyre squeal. I don't really get much V8 anything in there. I assume that's just the nature of the game around the 'Ring, but I am one of those guys who hears a good V8 and turns into an 8-year-old boy. I didn't get that from that video at all.

I'm sorry, but I may be one of the only people in the PH forum that just doesn't get at all excited by the current crop of BMW and Mercedes cars, even the hopped up versions. I'm sure they are dynamic, engaging, comfortable and a generally nice place to be from the driving seat - perhaps even value for money, but whenever I look at one of them in pictures or real life, they just don't give me a boner.

+1, the 6.2 is in a league of its own when it comes to noise. I saw a display thing at Mercedes World Brooklands, it had E63 and CLS63 (5.5 Turbo V8s) and the C63 with it's proper N/A 6.2. The noise wasn't comparable in the slightest. The Turbos were almost silent by comparison.

Is it AWD?
My google-fu suggests that the new C63 will be RWD only on launch. An AWD version will follow some time later (months? years?).Looking at how much the new M3/M4 struggles for traction in 1st and 2nd gear even in the dry, I’d prefer the new C63 to be AWD with fixed rear-biased torque split.

Next M3/M4 will surely be AWD as well, they even considered it for the current car. Next one will have to have some hybrid shenanigans on board though.

The video also shows how that car is screaming for an LSD.

is it me or is the current generation of Mercedes ugly! what an awful looking thing, from the front anyway! the last C63 had a raw and stern look about it, this looks all droopy and sluggish.
Its not just you. The headlights on new Mercs look waaaaay to big and the noses seem to flat and upright.Having said that, new BMW's also look awful from the front.
It sounds a THOUSAND times better than the new M3 which sounds crap in comparison.
It was never going to sound like the M156 but as a current C63 driver I think it will be a good engine and much better than anything BMW can offer - at least it is a V8, lets be thankful for that!
As much as I love my C63 the mpg and lack of range is a b
h. I am hoping for a 70 litre tank minimum and an average 25mpg instead of the current 18mpg (mine over 16k miles).
The M157 in the E63 is a great engine, not as emotional as the M156 but very good. Also easily tuneable to 620bhp+
