Pic Of The Week: Lamborghini Faena

Keep your Rapides and Panameras, we'll take one of these...

A collection of Lamborghinis will be gracing one of Europe's best classic car events - the Bensberg Classics in Germany from September 10 to 12 - including some rarities belonging to private collectors.

One of the stars at the Concours d'Elegance on Sunday will surely be this Lamborghini Faena. It's a rather special one-off from 1978 by Carozzeria Frua and is a car which, until this picture plopped into our mailbox the other day, nobody here at PH Towers had even heard of.

The Italian coachbuilder extended the wheelbase of a Lamborghini Espada by 180mm, thus creating space for a second pair of doors and making the Lamborghini Faena one of the forefathers of today's four-door supercars like the Porsche Panamera and Aston Martin Rapide. And it's unarguably gorgeous, too. (Oh yes it is!)

Apparently it premiered at the 1978 Turin Auto Show, and is now in the care of a Swiss collector - the lucky blighter.

I do like this car, just a glimpse of the interior tells you that it will be fantastic inside that car. Very nice indeed.

Far to large for me, but superb and impressive!

The Panamera is ghastly compared to this. A huge pig!

Looks superb. Big and impressive, but still beautiful. Shame it was never produced.

Fantastic looking car. I prefer that to the Lamborghini Espada which I always thought looks a little awkward

That's lovely, stylish in a Thunderbirds kind of way.

Lambo equivalent of the Aston Martin Lagonda.

i think that if you have a look at the rear of this lagondaesque brutush beauty you might be put off by the 'lets put a big aquarium on the backside' approach.

otherwise it looks awesome.

What's the matter - you don't like it too?

Never heard of it either. Suppose it's okay, still a Lambo.

Can't stand it, Lambo or not.

Reminds me of an old Citroen!

Sorry, but this doesn't do it for me. It looks like the type of gawky supercar that Homer Simpson might end up designing. A sort of Italian Austin Princess. No doubt it would attract a lot of stop and stare glances, but not necessrily for the right reasons. Yuk

Imagine rolling up at Wimbledon or Ascot 32 years ago with 4 of your closest friends and the back full of Bolly and cucumber sandwiches and you get the point of this car... all of you philistines .

What point - that you have poor friends who can't afford to pitch up in their own Lambo?
Or maybe you couldn't afford proper Lambo + Merc SEL with driver for such days?

Besides, what self-respecting Lambo owner would ever be eating something as dull as cucumber sandwiches....

It's funny but I bet you if Lambo came out with a 4 door Lambo now everybody would be hating it on here but 50 years down the line it would be cool..funny old world!

Um... it's just a boxy estate. Mine's an Espada then.

Incidentally, traffic reports in Melbourne got slightly more interesting this morning as someone had spun a black Uracco into a bus stop...
