Pic Of The Week: McLaren MP4-12C

Moody seaside shot makes us feel the fever for McLaren's styling

It's not often we get to call a McLaren press release boring, but the one about the new MP4-12C starting its US dealer tour didn't really fire us up.

Until we spotted the picture that came with it, that is. It's a moody dusk (or perhaps dawn) shot of the firm's new supercar somewhere on the Pacific (we imagine) coastline, which was taken around the time of the car's recent Pebble Beach presentation.

This single shot of the Supernova Silver MP4-12C took us aback for the simple reason it's the first 'proper' arty portrait of the new McLaren that we've seen.

Looks gorgeous, doesn't it? And definitely one in the eye for the critics of the car's styling, we reckon. So who still thinks the 458 Italia is more stunning..?

I'll admit, car looks looks great in this shot.

458 or this, not in a position to buy either.

You couldn't have picked a less flattering picture. The 458 looks miles better. Yawn!

I assume press release photos are considered public domain, and therefore you may use without the owners permission?

Great picture.

Not quite. Generally the rights assigned are 'editorial use only'. So we're ok, but you may not be!

First time I've seen a bit of Mclaren F1 in this car. Look at the roof line in the centre of the car and the wing mirror. smile

I would take the Mclaren over the 458, although to be fair I think they are both stunning.

The original Mclaren F1 still trumps both of them though!

You must be jokingsmile Where is the F1 roof line and where is the F1's wing mirrorsmile Something ugly has fallen down to spoil the nice picture of British summer we have now.

Every picture I see of the car makes me more depressed at the missed opportunity to make it genuinely stunning. I'm sure that the dynamics will be world class but it looks like each element was copied from the big book of supercars in a way that is inoffensive to as many people as possible. And however its photographed it just looks terribly bland...

Id go for the 458, so that when it goes wrong, I can toast me some marshmellow, then use the insurance payout to buy the MP4-12C

Yes. It looks like a generic car in a computer game because the game developer couldn't get permission from any car manufacturers.

I much prefer the MP4-12C styling compared to the 458. The Ferrari is too fussy IMHO.

The lines are nearly identical:

Look at the curve of the door below the window, the curve of the roofline, and the way the angle of the window to the vertical gradually increases as you run from front to back.

Regarding the comments above on the styling, I really like Mclaren's ethos on the MP4 and the F1, because both cars are subtle. For me this is the difference between wearing a very high quality tailored shirt and wearing one with a designer brand emblazened across it, or perhaps the difference between proper jewellary and bling.

Another thing worth considering is that cars like this tend to look bland compared with a Ferrari or Lambo, but if you drive one down the road amidst ordinary cars, they really stand out. The R8 is a good example of this. For a lot of people, me included, that's about as much standing out as we want to do.

In other words it has a touch of class about it yes
