Thieves Return Cars To Owners

Crooks steal cars and return them while owners sleep

Cars are being stolen in the Scottish Borders and returned without their owners realising.

The vehicles are being taken at night and the thefts only came to light because the keys are in the wrong place, the cars are parked in different positions or the mileage has changed.

The thefts have baffled police and so far at least eight cars have been stolen in Jedburgh recently.

The vehicles have been driven for long distances before being returned.

The thieves are understood to be entering homes, taking the car keys and going for a spin before putting the cars back where they found them.

Det Con John Brownlee of Lothian and Borders Police has appealed for information.

‘We are convinced that the cars are being driven over a reasonable distance during the night and we are concerned by the frequency of these thefts," he said.

‘Perhaps someone knows a person who lives in Jedburgh who has been turning up in another town or place during the early hours of the morning in a different car each time.’

Maybe it's Nicolas Cage from Gone in 60 Seconds doing some practice for a sequel.

Did you claim on your ins. for the loss of originals. The ones you have could be fake.

Same thing happened many years ago to my dads car. We lived on a farm down a long drive and, being simple country folk, never dreamed of locking anything. One Sunday morning my dad went out to the car to find the nearside wing smashed up, the windscreen smashed on the passenger side and a huge amount of blood in the passenger foot well. Someone had took it for a spin in the night, hit an unyielding roadside object (injuring their passenger in the process) and returned it to where they'd found it.

Amazing the trouble someone will go to for a 1.3 Y reg cavalier!

They should check the floor of the car to see if it's been drilled for a roll cage.

if they are taking them and putting them back they are not thieves, permanent deprivation is required for it to be a theft.

technicality yes but important, its a twoc not a theft

It appears someone in Scotland is sick of all the What Car threads on here and has decided to take an active approach to the problem.

I would speak to the kids!! Me and a few friends used to steal our parents cars when we were kids and put them back. We used to take a friends dads car while he was in the pub a couple of miles away, always brought it back before he left. Sometimes we had to park it in a different place but he never twigged smile

Mystery solved!!!

Anybody at Autocar been struggling to get cars for road test reports??

Or maybe Ollie S been out testing a few more potential Sheds of the Week.?

p.s. they could have done the job properly anyway & filled the tanks up for the owners.....
