OK if we are quoting articles I remember reading about an Audi test they did at a race track with one of their four wheel drive jobbies, they also had another Audi with the power taken away from the front wheels making it RWD only.

They proved the Four Wheel Drive car was quicker around the circuit but all the motoring Jurnos wanted to drive the RWD drive car because it was such a laugh, slower but more fun

I have almost always driven RWD cars and I think it has helped me with my karting.

Just before a race once my front wheel driving team mate asked what he shoud do if the back comes round on the kart, I had five mins to try and teach him about power overstear and opposite lock, was a fun race, with a couple of heart in the mouth moments.

I think Audi's 'impartial' experiment was slightly self serving. A 4WD car with the front axles disconnected doesn't equal a RWD car, in the same way that a Seirra which had had it's roof sliced of with an angle grinder is not a convertible!

I remember the touring cars when Audi ran the quattro A4s, they used to piss all over everything else in the wet - even when they were carrying the 80 kg (IIRC) weight penalty. So they banned 4WD the next season

Bit of a late reply to all your comments about my claim that over 200 bhp FWD is not really manageable. All the cars you have quoted are either less than than 200bhp, or, have some sort of electronic device to control the driveability! Totally underlines what I said, I think.

Last year I went to the MaxPower show in Burmingham, yes I know a chava show but me and my good friend James thought it was very good, but there was a car there with 400 BHP and it was FWD, the was a MK5 Ford Escort Convertable with a well moded Cose engine powering the front wheels, we thought this person was mad but true and I bet it could use most of its power.
But it would be bad in the rain and eat tyres.
And a while back I saw an artical about a Ford Fuct (Focus ) being made for drag racing and it was FWD with a 2 liter tubo charged engine and around 500 BHP +

Re : FWD cars with powerful engines.

If you ask anyone who knows about/drives the Police Volvo T5 patrol cars, they'll tell you how they eat front tyres. Can't bode well for the rest of the drivetrain etc.
