PH Fleet Update: Infiniti G37 Coupe

A tale of two Golf Bags

The insistence of marketing types that a certain sort of car must be capable of carrying two sets of golf clubs is an oft-discussed point.

This has led to engineers and designers, we're told, being forced to enlarge the rumps of what would otherwise be svelte and sleek GT coupes. It's a fate that has apparently befallen the curvy coupes of many brands, from Audi and BMW to Jaguar and Mercedes.

I must confess that I thought that this was all so much tosh. Until I opened the boot of our long-term Infiniti the other day to discover a sticker diagram showing me exactly how I might be able to squeeze a pair of Golf bags into the boot of Yokohama's finest.

It's odd that I didn't notice it before, so prominent is its position on the underside of the opened bootlid, but I suppose that sometimes you can't see things that are right in front of your face. That it should have been placed there, however, leaves one in no doubt as to how important golf - and sharing the sport with another whilst minimising your carbon footprint - must be to the intended owners of this car.

The funny thing is, though, the very fact that Infiniti fears you need to be shown a diagram to get two golf bags in highlights another, perhaps more important, point - the shallow boot floor and oddly shaped aperture actually make the G37's luggage compartment moderately impractical. And that's despite the ample backside.

Fortunately the two rear seats are relatively spacious and easy to get to, so make a fine extra luggage space. If I were into golf I might even be able to fit another three bags in there...

hmm

and wasnt the original target market the usa - who we know are a big nation of golfers......... and the fact they use the word 'stowed' suggests the same

Its possibly done to overcome historical onjections in the showroom - does make you wonder though......

Sod the golf. It's my MTB I want to be able to get into the back of the car.

Agreed. A diagram showing how to snuggle two of them up in the back of ya coupe would be far more useful. Though I wouldn't want to be the engineer who's told they might have to make a *few* compromises to fit them in.

Was'nt the F1 designed to take a golf bag? So the G37 is designed to take two sets, makes sense to me considering the home market are big golfing fans also.

P.s. Good looking car, just the colour in the photos don't seem to do it justice.

I thought golfists would both drive to the club - after all car-sharing does somewhat give the impression of economising which certainly wouldn't go down well. Much better for both to be seen to arrive in their black/grey/silver appropriately-badged shinynesses and meet in the club foyer to much mutual backslapping and so on. Arriving together may start some awkward financial or even home-arrangements rumours. yikes

Sometimes he has to wait hours for that space to become available.

Diagram should show them all bent and deposited in a wheelie bin at the side of the car.

As long as you can fit all the Le Mans stuff in, that's all we care about smile

You should try the convertible. When the roof is down, I can JUST squeeze two umbrellas into the remaining space. Luckily, golf scares me!

I hate golf. To the extent that whenever it's mentioned I have to say that I hate it.

I love golf. I have an scooby sport wagon so no problem (I also surf so space is required). Golf usually involves other stuff like trolleys etc. If you go straight from work you need to put laptops etc somewhere so I still dont think that a small boot works very well. I noticed the same instruction sticker in a Nissan Z but it just looked impossible to physically get two sets in.

I used to get 2 golf bags in the boot on my Mk2 MR2 which didn't have an especially fat arse...?

You mean the convertible Z? I can't imagine how impractical that is... I have the 'tonneau' cover in my coupe to hide whatever I may choose to keep in the boot from scummy people which has further reduced the space available. It's particularly tricky to fit any tall items into the boot, anything over a foot tall has to go in the passenger seat, some of the items I've had trouble with have been comical, stuff I just never thought wouldn't fit.... In many respects I wish they had fitted the spare wheel further forwards and given me some depth in the boot or found another solution though the thought of not having a spare tyre would make me uncomfortable. And the strut brace, I wish that was a simple double steel/alloy bar and not the plastic behomoth which is present...

I think I probably have had my golf clubs in the back at some point but I don't play these days, not enough time... You in Edinburgh? Not many Z's around in Edin though there are far more then there were when I first got mine.
