Pic Of The Week: The Best Tin-Tops In The World?

Why we reckon it's DTM FTW for today's POTW (that's enough acronyms - Ed)

The DTM should be a salutary lesson to creators of tin-top race series the world over, be it touring cars or sports cars, because it is proof that you can have technologically advanced cars and properly close racing.

And it's set to get even better in 2012. At the moment you can only place your allegiance at the door of either Audi or Mercedes (hence the choice of POTWs), but today BMW unveils its own challenger that will take the fight to Audi and Mercedes by joining the German touring car party next year.

But while we'll have to wait to see the BMW in race action, even with just two badges on the various cars, the DTM is a pretty healthy spectacle.

Close racing, top-quality drivers (it's where hotshoe Scot Paul Di Resta has been hiding) and big crowds is a winning combination. BTCC take note...

No comments yet? Modern DTM sucks, that's all I can say.

Agree. Compared to days of old, DTM is a pale imitation of it's former awesome self. Still decent racing compared to a lot of other series, but best tin tops in the world? Not a chance. ALMS, FIA GTs, etc.

Not bad pics though smile

Di Resta wasn't exactly "hiding" - he did win it smile

Can't say I've ever seen the appeal. Although it should - they go to loads of really great old racetracks like the Norisring and Sachsenring. Perhaps I should pay more attention.

Glad I'm not the only one that thinks DTM is dull. The BTCC is far more exciting and ITV's coverage of it and the support races is brilliant.

I have gone to the DTM at Brands for several years,I have always loved it the cars make a lovely sound and check out Jamie Green winning at the Norisring in 2009 a truly epic final few laps.

after the last two weeks this is a bit "clinical" to use a popular phrase and I find myself agreeing with a poster last week who said the classic market was where it was at for him...although those Astons looked great in the other article! Photograph wise time adds a lot to pictures...

Acronyms form pronounceable words - those are abbreviations. Just a detail.

And now I will get my coat. Nice pics, thanks.

Don't think I like these enough to grace my wallpaper spot.
That benz looks quite mean though

Where's an Alfa 155 in Jagermeister or Martini livery, now they were sexy!

BTCC and NASCAR are the best IMO closely followed by WTCC and DTM.

Although admittedly I've watched very little of it, these are the best in my opinion.

Tend to agree. The series is of next to no relevance. Technologically the cars have no connection to those that we all drive. Therefore, why not dress them up to look good...? I don't understand why BMW is wasting it's money and getting involved. I would have thought it better to properly support the WTTC.

I've not watched DTM for years, but the last time I looked it was just a procession of Mercs and Audis driving around dull street circuits.

Where can you watch it these days? Isn't it on ESPN with WRC? I love WRC and I'm not willing to pay for ESPN so no chance with DTM, unless it is somewhere else on the satellite channels that are already part of the std package like Motors TV. frown

The last time BTCC was televised down here was when Radisich was driving them, but I saw a WTCC race a while back and it was as dull as a dull thing on dull thursday in dullville - I much prefer watching V8 supertaxis.

no young man, last weeks Napier and the picture of Surtees the week before were classic pictures of classic cars, both fantastic and worthy, this week's picture is modern and the cars are clinical and with no real soul imo. I can't imagine them on my desk top...however the Astons in the other article on Friday would suit my desk top. There I have analysed my comment for you...
