Notes On The Nissan R35 GT-R

As Godzilla slips out of the spotlight, is he (she, or it?) still a force to be reckoned with?

A new GT-R like this will set you back around £70k from Europe's highest volume retailer

The R35 is one of those cars that splits popular opinion - some love them, some hate them, and others just respect them. Well the novelty may have worn off a little since sales started here in 2009, but they're still a mighty performance proposition, so when PH had a chance to chat with Middlehurst Motorsport's High Performance Centre Manager Gary Finney, we had to ask him for a few pointers about the car. With a history of working closely with Nissan - and the Skyline in particular since 1993 - Gary has the benefit of plenty of experience.

"The R35 doesn't really fit in with Nissan's usual way of doing things. As a company they're more about Notes, Micras, and blue rinses' he reckons. 'But the R35 covers a wide demographic. We have customers who are F1 drivers, footballers, lottery winners, oil rig workers, bankers and so on. Some of them drive their cars every day, some don't drive them in the wet, some don't drive them at all, and some forget to service them."

Maintaining the service record can be a bit of an issue, because the R35s servicing schedule is set not by Nissan GB, or even Nissan Europe, but by Kazutoshi Mizuno. "He's the Chief Vehicle Engineer for the GT-R who stipulated a service every six months or 6,000 miles," says Gary, "so if you've had your R35 tucked away for a few months and have hardly driven it, it is supposed to have a service when you get it out again regardless of how far it's been driven."

Routine servicing is cheap
Routine servicing is cheap
The cost of a routine service is £252.41 including VAT assuming no parts need to be changed. But what about modifications, they surely upset Mr Mizuno? "Actually, contrary to what some might think, very few people modify these cars a lot - there's no need. We've calculated that a standard R35 on road tyres will lap the 'Ring quicker than the R34 Group N car that Andy Middlehurst was racing in the late-nineties. The most popular alteration is to fit a different Y-pipe, which effectively removes a silencer and releases a bit more sound from the exhaust. Besides, these cars do have a data logger which will spill the beans if the owner has experienced a failure due to the boost being increased or the fuel/air ratio being altered. It also shows if the car has been warmed-up and cooled-down correctly."

Interestingly, when I asked Gary what he'd recommend in terms of extracting more performance from the R35, his answer was instant: "Learn to drive it better. We run track days fairly often and a lot of owners don't seem to understand just how hard these cars can be pushed in terms of cornering. Without doubt the safest and best way to make one of these cars go faster is to get some expert tuition. 10 years ago R34 owners were coming from having owned Imprezas or Evos and they wanted bigger brakes, bigger wheels, half-a-million horsepower and so on, but there's no need with the R35 - it already has all of that. Today's R35 owner is just as likely to have previously owned an exotic European car. Some do actually go back to a traditional exotic after a year or so... but many of those come back again to the GT-R"

Fewer cars 'modded' than you'd expect
Fewer cars 'modded' than you'd expect
Seeing as though an R35 will weigh-in at almost 1800kg loaded-up with fuel, I expected the subject of tyres to be a long and drawn-out one, but apparently, as with the rest of the car, there's not much need to change anything. 'I've seen these cars run on incorrectly-sized Continentals, Pirellis, Toyo 888s and so on, but I'd leave them on the Dunlop SP600s they come with," he says. Hang on, aren't they a 'run-flat' tyre? "That's the point," says Gary. "Run-flats have a very strong Kevlar side-wall which the R35 relies on. In our experience, the best tyre for combined road and track use is the Dunlop."

In terms of longevity, while you can obviously get through a new set on the track in a day, for more moderate use Gary reckons you might get 12,000 miles or even more, but again his advice isn't what you might expect. "There are three geometry settings which range from almost-upright to two degrees of negative camber. Run the car on the motorway with maximum camber and of course you're going to wear out the inner shoulder in no time, although each and every R35 will wear-out the inner shoulder first. Ironically, the harder you corner the more even your tyre wear will be!"

190mph available from here...
190mph available from here...
Grey imports are available from around £33,000, but if you're after a good UK car you're looking at closer to £40,000 for something like this and up to £72,000 for a new one.

Whether you think the GT-R is a tech-laden masterpiece or just a sensible solution for going really fast, there's no escaping the fact that they're a performance bargain. They can crack 190mph, sprint to 60 from standstill in under four seconds (closer to three if you use launch control), and can quite reasonably be used to commute in, if you want to. Even the servicing isn't too steep.

Yet ask the question 'what's not to like?' and the R35 still has the capability to kick off a serious argument. But, er, for £40 grand - what's not to like..?

Still love these things! They look a lot less flamboyant than a Ferrari or Lambo, they even make an MP4-12C look spectacular and out of this world.
But they still have that "gundam sci-fi" look to them which makes it so typically Japanese and imho, very cool smile
Has anyone ever painted one in Gundam RX-78 colours? That'd be awesome!

I love them too, whats amazing is how big they are when you get close and how much noise they make on full chat, i live in watford and saw one screaming throught the town with a custom plate when i googled the plate, it was owned by the head of the GTR forum UK and has serious power upgrades. All i remember was the noise and the way it disappeared out of view like a missile.

It is epic. It destroyed the Jag on Top Gear last week.

It looks very unassuming unlike previous models.

irrelevant, somebody with a Jag would not be bothered ... it goes fast enough for them

I do think it is relevant. GTR's a lesson in how to utilise power and put it down properly.

And the Jag is a lesson in elegance, comfort, and refinement.

Servicing one of these is £250? Considering the performance on offer I'd say this car is a bargain in more ways than one!

i suppose. But if you buy a Jag like the one on Top Gear your making a statement about the cars credentials in the performance stakes. Then theres the price.

Pissed me right off, that did. Race a 4WD launch-controlled car against a conventional RWD one in the wet and what do you expect? Throw in Clarkson adding a whole minute to the Jag's Nordschleife time and you start to wonder if he actually hates the British car industry..

Anyway, back on-topic, I do have huge respect for this car and most of all the way it can simply destroy things costing multiples of its asking price. The breadth of ability is stunning, though I do hear it rides quite badly, possibly hence people replacing the run-flats!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. This is THE car of the decade in my little modest opinion!

I've always appreciated engineering and function over style and fashion.

I simply want one as soon as possible.

Run flats are a pain in most cars. I was honestly shocked how it launched off the line. Normally its the RWD that have an advantage off the line. 4WD tend to "crawl" as usually something between the front and rear wheels tends to be quite expensive to replace

A massively impressive feat of engineering, but one that I have no desire to own. It's not my kind of car at all.

I know what you mean, and I'm not having a go a you in particular, everyone is entitled to their opinion..but has there ever been a car that people are so eager to tell you that they don't like it?

Hey, that's my car (the one at a "whisker under £40k")!!!! Nice surprise, nice extra bit of advertising.

Have to agree the GTR is absolutely stunning, I'd love to keep it, but have the new McLaren due in 6 weeks, so can't swing both these (plus the Radical for the track) past the better half... got to give in somewhere.

Interesting the 4 folks I've had in contact about mine are all ex-GTR owners who've gone on to something else and are now returning - tells you something about the impression they leave you with!!

Possibly not, I also don't think there's ever been a car which so many people recognise as a good car, but don't like.

IMO, this GTR does so many things, so well whilst not being too "shouty" and for a compartively affordable price, that it is bound to be in MOST PHers' fantasy garages: A 4 seat coupe with a decent boot that, depending on your mood, could pootle to the newsagents for a paper on a Sunday morning or keep pace with exotica costing twice, three times or more, must surely appeal!
Obviously, the badge, styling and possibly the way the performance is delivered are much more subjective issues but as a package, it's pretty unique. Which is nice!
I'd like one. Pleeease...
