Frankfurt: Lamborghini Gallardo Super Trofeo

Hardcore roadgoing Lambo is most focused Gallardo yet

A replacement for the Gallardo is pretty imminent, but Lamborghini is proving there's life in the old girl yet with this hardcore, race-inspired version that's been unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show.

Created to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy and to be built in strictly limited numbers, the Gallardo Super Trofeo is inspired by the cars used in the one-make Super Trofeo race series.

The new limited-edition Super Trofeo (just 150 will be built) is similar in spec to the LP 570-4 Superleggera.

It gets the same 5.2-litre V10 engine, producing 562bhp and 398lb ft, and yet weighs 1340kg, 70kg less than the 'ordinary' LP560-4. As a result, the Super Trofeo can sprint to 62mph from rest in just 3.4secs, although the chunky rear wing stops the top speed topping 200mph.

The interior is a feast of carbon fibre and Alcantara, with carbon used for the bucket seats, centre console and even the steering wheel.

It's a measure of how far the Super Trofeo goes down the line of 'racing car for the road' that other options include a roll cage, four-point safety harnesses and even a fire extinguisher.

The carbon-ceramic brake discs, are also inevitably monumental, measuring 365mm at the front and 356mm at the rear eight-piston calipers grabbing the fronts and four-piston calipers at the rear.

I was thinking the same thing. A car this exciting to drive really shouldn't come across as this boring when news of the car is released.

As much as I like the Trofeo I'd change the wing with the Reiter GT3 Strada.

I do like these special editions to be honest. But then it is one of my absolute favourite models and I'm dreaming.

Looks very nice in red actually. I agree that the spoiler could maybe do with a change though..

Isn't this just a Superleggera? 70kgs lighter than the standard Gallardo with the same power.

As much as I dislike the milking of a franchise and endless special editions, I very much like this, it looks proper bonkers (like a lambo should be).

Getting very bored of special edition Lambo's now, nonetheless that engine cover is awesome!

Bring on the replacement.

They've really dragged the Gallardo out. Isn't this one basically a Superleggera?, at least make the final 'special edition' one different and more 'special'.

nono

The LP560 is not a special edition, it's an upgraded model with a facelift, so is the Superleggera.

Pardon my ignorance, but how many Gallardo's have there been? The original was launched in 2004. Was there ever a Mk2 version or was it simply a facelifted model with new headlights etc?

The Balboni was a relevant special edition as its 2WD was a material technical change.

Regarding this ST I wonder how much more than a tarted up Supperleggera this is. The article does not mention any material changes beyond wing and interior touch-ups...

Isn't this generally a way of getting rid of excess shells etc in the advent of a new model and reducing wasteage? It's not just Lambo and Porsche that do it, it happens the world over. There are countless Mondeo/Astra/Golf/Vectra special editions when they're on their way out (see the grammar there.....) It can result in some very special cars, Scirocco Storm MK1 springs immediately to mind..

The LP560-4 was essentially the Mk2 (launched in 2008) iirc, new engine, new rear lights and altered face.

I agree, the Balboni was on a different level and a real 'special' special edition. I can never really see the point of these sort of things... why not just buy an ex race car and slap some plates on?!
