Ha-ha-ha if you thought the Defender DC100 concept we showed you the other week was the 'lifestyle' version. Land Rover has unveiled this alternative take on the concept called (somewhat predictably) the DC100 Sport.
Thus the car features 'a wrap-around aero screen and cut-down side windows for exhilarating open air motoring', but the next bit of the press release made us read it twice to make sure we weren't looking at the brochure for a special type of gentleman's sauna: 'Flowing back from the seats is a twin-humped fastback roofline that encloses a generous load bed which incorporates fittings specifically designed to secure extreme sports equipment.'

A Defender to take you places that you never dreamed of..?
With its gaudy 'look at me' paint and styling cues, it's hard to picture the DC100 Sport in any other environment than 'Muscle Beach', but Land Rover reckons the concept will also appeal to pukka surfer types and the like. They say the Sport model takes its cues from the early canvas roofed Defenders, 're-imagined as a performance concept for the 21st Century.
Well, that says it all, really. Although a bit of us secretly quite likes it... oo-er!

More chance of selling those than the current Defender. They are up against pickups and trucks from Isuzu, Toyota, MitsuFord etc. . Lets face it they are all a lot nicer to drive. better built, lighter and less leaky from being modern designs. They also 'should' be more reliable. The above also sell a ton more than the current Defender does or ever will.
I'm sure a stripped down version would be quite fun and look pretty good.
BTW I'm a big Landy fan with a 1971 series 2A soft top, not a hater. However I can see the need to move on and Landrover make some money!

No, no, no, no, no, this is wrong, it should be illegal. Its molestation!!!!!
Will someone please get rid of this new "styling" team that has been employed. JLR have one of the most recognisable vehicles in the world. It works, dont fix it. They have the other brands (which in my opinion have been ruined recently) for the sloans.
Pray tell, where does one put a mucky sheep, dead calf, fence posts, logs, bales etc in this pumped up Yeti? It seems that there is no real interest in serving the communities that have supported the brand for the last 60 years!
On a personal note, if I wanted to drive something like this, I would start with a corsa/saxo and mod it till it looked crap!

The Defender is very expensive to build, cramped and even the new ones leak! They also going to have problems getting current defender past 2014/15 because of the emissions. Also, I imagine are loosing lots of sales every day to the likes of the Mitsubishi's L200 and the Nissan Navara. Yes, we all know they have leaf springs, but more opeople still buy them than the Defender.
Also, you go on about the cliche Sheep and Hay bales, but I've notieced they havent released photos of the interior yet apart from one of the steering wheel. If it was all rubberised and hose down friendly this would answer all the apparent farmers who buy Defenders to move one sheep ect ect.
You can't expect Land Rover to stick to to two box design. They need to get the emisions down and one of the ways they can do do that is making it slightly more aerodynamic, so they have to slope the front end. You can see they have tried to keep the boxiness at the back.

They need to produce vehicles that not only meet modern emissions legislation, but also meet crash and pedestrian safety laws. They also need to be economical to build, be reliable and most importantly sell.
The Defender is truly an icon, much like the original Mini, VW Beetle and Willys Jeep (from which the original Land Rover idea came from), but in todays modern market orientated, safety and environmental dominated world, the Defender in it's current form really has had it's day.
I believe that JLR will come up with a suitable replacement vehicle, it will be excellent off road but will also sell in greater numbers, be more reliable and efficient than the previous model.
I know that there will be the haters amongst the Land Rover traditionalists, but at the end of the day JLR is business and hand building a vehicle that hasn't really changed in the last thirty odd years for a diminishing market is just not cost effective.
