Frankfurt: Audi R8 GT Spyder

Ingolstadt reveals hardcore R8, open-air style...

Roofless versions of established supercar favourites seem to be something of a Frankfurt fad this year, Audi's Spyder version of the hardcore R8 GT taking its place alongside the SLS Roadster and 458 Spider in the league of expensive ways to enjoy the wind in your hair.

Audi has shed 85kgs from the standard R8 Spyder, bringing the weight down to 1,640kgs. Throw a 560hp, 398lb ft 5.2-litre V10 in the mix and you get from 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 197mph. That's a couple of tenths and mph off the coupe version and, sadly for Audi, slower than the 458 Spider too.

Audi is only making 333 (making it a sort of 'demi-beast'?) and each car will have its production number stamped on top of the gear lever. Speaking of which, it's R tronic automated manual and left-hand drive only. And you'll know our thoughts on the former from our roadtest of the coupe version.

To make sure it stands out over the hordes of standard R8s the GT Spyder has been lowered by 10mm, comes with an onboard lap timer, round exhausts, a larger diffuser, darker tail lights and a dual-lip front spoiler.

If you want one be ready to throw around £200,000 in Audi's direction and act fast - all 33 of the coupe versions coming to the UK sold out more or less immediately.

I like that car, but, a Lap Timer in a soft top? confused Is that required in a car that will most likely never see a track! The Coupe yes, but.....

I don't know how they manage to take such a good looking basic car and make it so chavvy as that. Yuck.

Beauty and looks are very much subjective, however in my eyes the design language of the R8 doesn't lend itself well to the cabrio, and even less well to this. The most striking design feature of the coupe were the the side blades, which defined the whole look extremely well. As sharp and crisp as the coupe looks, without those the rest of the design loses a lot of punch, making me find it rather lackluster.

But, like I said, thats just my view. Clearly these things will sell faster than you can contemplate the intrcacies of the design.

I'm also quite prepared to be proven wrong when (if?) I see it in the metal, so to speak.

+1 - what they mean is 'Dealer pre-orders' - just got to find customers now. As commented elsewhere - hasn't Audi heard there is another recession coming...

Go back to the original R8(V8) and pick one up for ~£50k now - loaded, as all the early adopters have swapped 'em out for the V10's...

I am not a fan of these overweight, overstuffed, open-topped demi-supercars regardless of their powerplants. They are ultimately GT's at best, less in the mode of the classic GT's and more using today's terms of cars that yearn to be sports cars but just don't make it. I accept that they can have impressive 0-60 and 0-100 times and may even put a few laps together around the track but they are ultimately designed to look good in Beverly Hills, Miami, or the equivalent elsewhere in the world.
I have it a '5'.
