Nordschleife Pile-Up: The Aftermath

On-board video reveals extent of carnage

We knew that last weekend's eight-car crash on the Nurburgring was pretty bad, but this video makes you realise just how much worse it could have been.

It's been taken by a chap who arrived at the scene after the first crash, but just before the 'Ring taxi arrives on the scene.

What with crashed cars and their bits strewn across the road, drivers taking to the grass to avoid them, and others even stopping on track, it's quite an astonishing scene. And quite amazing that the result wasn't actually any worse...

putin de merde indeed

looks like everyone decides the best thing to do is stop and block up more of the track... if there's people on-scene then just keep clear!!

Holy hell, those road works are a joke. So dangerous and definitely would have caught me out.

What car does this chap have do you think?

If you watch round about 10:30 you can see the Ring Taxi hit the Corvette...

The signage was appalling in this incident.

Ironically the more capable you are or the better car you have, the chances are you're more likely to have crashed, having arrived on scene travelling much faster.

Those early ones were lucky they had space to manoeuvre. I can easily see how the later ones simply had no where to go.

Why oh why wasn't there warning signs and gradual reduction to single file traffic. Very un-german detail and efficiency.

They should have had a warning about those road works far sooner.

That's a very very fast part of the track and surprised that more weren't involved...

Complete track management failure. No warnings, blind 4th gear corner - this was never going to end any other way. There should have been warnings to slow down half a mile before hand and why couldn't these track repairs have been done on a closed track? Madness.

Blimey! There's a lot of carnage there.

Driving faster than sight lines allow, without the aid of marshals warning of accidents, with heavy braking for road works on the blind exit of a quick bend - it's un nerving to watch!

The road sign was virtually on the crash scene, not giving anyone any time to brake!!

Nutty set-up for those roadworks, the mobile warning truck should have been way back and, ideally there should have been two of them; on before the corner and one immediately after. Amazing the outcome wasn't worse.

I reckon it's a 6cyl late 80's early 90's BMW 3 series, stripped out for track use. And the driver is definietely French - in times of stress, everyone reverts to expletives in their respective mother tongue. laugh

Exactly! The further impacts could have been avoided if people had used some sense and carefully got clear.

Can I just confirm;

Roadworks weren't sign posted enough.. Thus the Porsche has gone barrelling in there and crashed.. Then we get to where this video starts?

What is even more frustrating is the classic rubber necking at the accident instead of driving away & making space for all the other cars coming behind them!! Did noone think back to a second or so ago when they were traveling at speed towards the accident?! Amazing.
