Japanese supercar crash takes out eight Ferraris

Could this be the most expensive crash ever?

An incredible 14-car supercar pile-up in Japan on Sunday could end up being one of the most expensive supercar crashes in history.

The incident, which happened in the southern prefecture of Yamaguchi, wiped out 14 cars, including eight Ferraris, three Mercedes and a Lamborghini.

According to police, the crash started when one of the Ferrari drivers lost control of their car while changing lanes and ploughed into the central reservation.

"A group of cars was doing 140-160km (85-100 miles) per hour," an unidentified eyewitness told Japanese broadcaster TBS. "One of them spun and they all ended up in this great mess."

The road was closed for six hours while authorities cleared up the damage, which included several Ferrari 360s, F355s and a Testarossa, many of which look likely to have been written off. Although none of the drivers or passengers was seriously injured, it's been reported that 10 people were treated for bruises and minor injuries. And no doubt some seriously bruised wallets.

So if you happen to need some spare parts for your Ferrari, we suspect there might be a glut of them in Japan in the not-so-distant future...

PHers are already talking about the incident here

It shows how one person's mistake can cause havoc to plenty of others.

As long as there were no serious injuries, then that's the most important thing - metal can (well, almost) always be replaced.

Might have been an idea to learn some proper driving skills if you are going to belt around in a 'supercar'.

I think those Ferraris should receive a medal of valour for bravely sacrificing themselves to take one Toyota pious off the road.

Phew, i was expecting some real bad news, ie some real rarities wiped out considering the amount of quality supercars now residing in Japan. Not great but could be worse (especially if you were involved)

Any news on what sort of Diablo it was? There don't seem to be any pictures of it.

This is a real pity, but if these cars are going to be used, then unfortunately this is likely to happen from time to time. I saw a very rare Venturi 400 GT get wrecked on a supercar day a couple of years back, and that also was a great shame.

As for the strength of these cars, about 5 years ago I was in the passenger seat of a 355F1GTS when the driver lost it (braking hard out of a tunnel in France straight into deep standing water) and the car ended up in the barriers, admittedly after losing a lot of speed. We were both 100% fine, and £25K and 14 months later the car was rebuilt to a very high standard, and is still in regular use today. Admittedly it didn't look as bad as the ones in the photos here.

A group of foreign car enthusiasts were heading to Hiroshima from Kyushu when one of the drivers lost control trying to overtake a car on a wet, curved part of China Road in Yamaguchi Prefecture. The Ferrari driver reportedly hit the median and created a reaction that caused the other cars in the lineup to crash, according to Japanese media (translated).
Never let facts get in the way of a rant!

Not sure how true but, the reporter on Radio Four this morning said that the road was wet at time of accident.

Before jumping to conclusions, there could be a legitimate reson why all those cars piled up on a clear motorway at 70mph. I doubt it, but there might be! :-)

I had the displeasure a couple of years back of sharing the French motorways with a British "Supercar Run" on their way to Monte Carlo. Let's face it, our 14 cars and 2 bikes were out there to have a hoon in the Alps for 10 days, we all know the score. But those donuts ( not all I grant you ) were on a different planet with what is acceptable, we were UNDERTAKEN on a dual carraigway so fast by an Audi RS6 it blew a Caterham R400 just inches away from hitting the central barrier at 90mph.... I am no saint and a verteran of many a PH run, but I think most of here know how easily a monster pile-up like that could happen...

I am loving all the comments too you get whan a Supercar is crashed, usually aimed at the driver not being able to handle the car. Says a lot about people who crash Kias and the like doesn't it!
