PH Blog: Santa has come early

Technic Lego at Christmas is as traditional as turkey and tinsel at PH towers

OK, so I'm a bit of a Lego geek. Especially Technic Lego. So when news broke about the biggest, baddest, most Technic of Technic kits EVER - the U400 Unimog - I knew it was going on the Christmas list. I know, I should be over it by now. But I'm not.

Lego Unimog: nearly as complex as real thing
Lego Unimog: nearly as complex as real thing
And I know I'm supposed to wait until Christmas day and everything but the nice man at Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles seems to have beaten Santa to it and my Christmas is, officially, sorted.

Mercedes CV man wasn't quite done there though. Because tomorrow I'm going to be driving the real thing too. A full comparison of real Unimog versus Lego one will follow. Well, once I've built the latter. Nine hours is the reckoning of someone else who's constructed one. Microwave Christmas dinner it is then. I've got more important things to be doing over the break.

Watch this space for more Unimog related goodness...

Wow, it's huge! And awesome!
By the time the wintery weather hits, you can use that shovel/snowplow to clear out the driveway!

Seems to have been a reasonably successful press campaign - there was a huge puff piece in the Torygraph the other day.

Used to love technic Lego. I won a crime egg in school CDT class as I made the one that climbed the steepest slope all the way to the top! Brilliant stuff. It was also, (the pistons at least), better than an empty Niro for shooting bits of half chewed paper against the blackboard!

There's a big box wrapped up under the Christmas tree addressed to me. And the other day my wife wrapped up some batteries to go with it... I dropped a lot of hints so hopefully it is what I think it is. The original red Lego unimog from the 80s was my first ever technic so I've wanted this one badly ever since it was announced.

Looking to add to my collection:

Saw a fully built up one of these in store. It's awesome - 3 gearboxes, full suspension, with four wheel drive, winch, pneumatic crane arm, in line 4cyl engine with moving pistons, and robust enough to not to shed a part when dropped feet first onto the floor from about a foot and a half.

The alternate build is a tasty looking snowplough. Will keep my 8 year old going for a few days!

And a reference to the Torygraphs chap videoing himself building it...

The Unimog is fabulous.

If it makes you feel any better, my precocious, Lego fanatic son got it for his 6th birthday and completed it in a weekend!! He made one mistake.

It is a great kit smile

It's great, and sat on my desk at work, because the missus wasn't impressed. Apparently there isn't anywhere to put it at home.

If work is quiet over the Christmas Break, I might get a Unimog to work on...

Funnily enough I've just picked up a UniMog from a friend who collected it from a fellow PH'er who got it in the Argos 3 for 2 offer, which cut the price down somewhat.

Its sitting on my desk waiting for some time when the kids are not around to um.. help hehe
