New Audi RS4 binned, says rumourmill

Word on the web suggests RS4 ditched in favour of RS6

It looks as if there will be no new Audi RS4 - at least for the foreseeable future - since Audi appears to have sacrificed its compact super-saloon/estate in order to hurry up the arrival of the next RS6.

The decision doesn't appear to have been taken until the last minute, however, as The RS4 has already been caught in the prototype stage.

It might seem strange to cancel a car so close to fruition, but it does seem telling that Audi is talking up its S6,S7 and S8 triplets (powered by the new turbocharged V8) for 2012, but makes no mention of the RS4.

There is also a feeling that an RS4, expected to use the same 450hp V8 as the RS5, would rather step on the corporate super-saloon toes of the forthcoming RS6.

Of course, as is so often the case with internet rumour-age, there is also a counter-story. In this case it's the fact that the B8-generation Audi RS4 could get a reprieve in late 2013, in estate form only, and destined just for European markets. That, too, would make sense as 'RS' Audis have traditionally been launched towards the end of model lifecycles.

And Audi even has resurrection form with the RS4 - the last B7 almost never made it to production, if contemporary rumours are to be believed.

So will we or won't we see an RS4 version of the current A4? That's not a bet we'd currently like to put money on, whatever the outcome

Stoopid decision. I think we'd all rather see another RS4.

Well they've never really got it right since the previous RS4 have they?

Would've been nice though, the current might lend itself to RS treatment fairly well.

They would benefit from producing something to remind us of the 80's quattro heritage in an A4 size package rather than a pimped up Seat ibiza with 256bhp for £35k!

Getting bored of very numerous grey, silver and black Audis.

B7 Rs4 V8 set such a high benchmark it was always going to a difficult act to update.......

...suppose I'll have to keep my Avant a bit longer

22-24 mpg is easier to stomach compared £10ks of of depreciation

Amazed by this.....thought the RS4 was pretty much an iconic car for Audi.

The Audi RS4 - The ram raiders car of choice at the moment!!!!!
Great car (apart from problematic suspension fitted as std, and theft risk) I think Audi should reconsider as the RS4 has a great following and they could lose a lot of clients who would look to change to a new model but will look elsewhere.

I've had it from a pretty good source that the new car will be launching end 2012 in estate form.

It's good sound business to can the RS4. Audi would have provided the 'enthusiast' with a car that will have been automatic and more than likely the same price that one could buy a Porsche 911 for, not that there's any talk of hating performance automatics or the price of a new car these days on here.

Stupid Idea.

If I was BMW I would now plow more money into the next gen BMW M3, I would also add a BMW M3 Estate to the line up to offer an alternative to the C63 estate (which will have the field to its self should the RS4 die).

Odd. I've seen far more RS4's on the road over the years than RS6's? Surely they sell many more RS4's..?

according to howmanyleft.co.uk

RS6 C6 V10 peaked at 376
RS6 C5 V8 peaks at 1052

RS4 B7 V8 peaked at just over 3000 add in 530 from the original V6 twinturbo

Rs5 581 so far

Disappointing news if true as it would (might) be a car I'd be looking at.

Although Autocar said this week its Avent only and uses the RS5s V8 444bhp 317lbft, optional 7 speed dual clutch transmission on page 18.

Ah well, we'll see!
