Toyota reveals super-IQ and massaged GT 86

Miniature hot hatch and tarted-up coupe lead Toyota's assault on Tokyo Auto Salon

Toyota has revealed a super-heated IQ and a tweaked version of its new GT 86 coupe as part of a 15-strong line-up for the Tokyo Auto Salon tuning show.

The IQ, which has been created by 'Gazoo Racing tuned by MN' (GRMN), is a supercharged prototype that will spawn a limited run of 100 units later in the year (no word on price or probability of getting it in the UK, but we suspect the answers to be 'high' and 'low', in that order).

Its little 1.33-litre engine, courtesy of that supercharger, has been massaged by GRMN to create a 133hp and 133lb ft of torque (we see a pattern developing here).

Other tricks include a six-speed, close ratio transmission, uprated brakes, sports suspension and a tuned dual exhaust system (as well as the rather obvious visual tweaks).

The GT 86, meanwhile, has received the attention of TRD (Toyota Racing Developments). Key handling tweaks for the TRD 'Performance Line' GT 86 include a reworked suspension with new front and rear anti-roll bars, a carbon front strut, rear diffuser, additional cross-bracing and a high-response exhaust system. Finished in Satin White Pearl, the coupe also gets skirts and spoilers, 18-inch alloy wheels and sports seats and meters in the cabin.

Lol @ the 'super-iQ'. It's genius!!;)

The GT86 looks fantastic! Bring back the good old Max power days. The motoring world seems poorer without bor racers.

I'm all for companies offering "hot" versions of their cars but I would honestly be too embarrassed to drive that IQ.. it looks dreadful! The GT86 on the other hand...

I love the GT-86 and I really need one in my life. The TRD bits just make it look even better. As for the iQ, I don't know why but there's something about it I like. Possibly just the randomness of it.

That super-IQ looks like a real pocket rocket. Bet it'll be able to out accelarate a new Aston Martin Cygnetwobble

Would love to see a quite highly strung N/A engine in the GT86, and a weight saving programme just for the hell of it, mainly over the rear wheels!!!!!!!!

a carbon front strut?

Do you mean Strut "brace" - or have they swapped one of the spring/shock assemblies for one made of carbon? wink

The Super-IQ shows exactly what Aston should have done to the donkey in the Cygnet.

Not sure about the quad exhausts on the GT-86, the front I do like.

Have to admit, despite that awful 1.0 engine, I have always enjoyed driving the IQ, so with a decent engine, it may be nearly as much fun as my classic Mini Cooper! It does look AWFUL with the extra kit though... as for the Cygnet - what a terrible way to undermine such a great brand.

All they appear to have done with GT86 is make an ugly car even uglier.

Meanwhile judging from reviews, surely the suspension is the last thing that needs revising??

  • yawn*....
What's the point in taking the iQ that is nothing more than a city car chosen solely by your wallet and trying to turn it into something it was never meant to be? I for one wouldn't be gutted if it never becomes available anywhere!

The GT86 on the other hand... nice to know TRD has already got their hands on it, although would be more interesting if they focussed more on the engine tweaks than adding cosmetics. The mod list sounds like the sort of thing a 15yr old would dream of after watching Fast & Furious...

Hmmm... that Super IQ engine would go into the Aygo. (fingers crossed)
