Spotted: Audi R8 V10 manual

The last proper supercar with a manual gearbox? Might well be and reason enough to pounce says Harris

It's just another R8, right?

No, it isn't. Allow me to explain, because the Audi R8 range is a minefield. Every R8 is a talented machine. We're now so accustomed to Audi entering new segments and enjoying instant success that we take it for granted, but what the R8 managed in 2007 remains remarkable. Only the Ferrari 458 spoilt its claim to being the best mid-engined super-sports car on sale.

If the mix of manual and paddle-shift (R tronic) V8 cars now leaves a decent choice of both in the PH classifieds - and I would thoroughly recommend the manual - the same is not true of the V10 version.

The V8 versus V10 argument is much like the old 205 GTi 1.6 versus 1.9 situation: common consensus asserted that smaller was sweeter. I just never saw it that way with the 205, and I certainly don't with the R8. The V8 is fast and agile. The V10 will lay-down 200 yards of rubber in third gear. It's an animal.

The V10 is the most underrated car of its type, but it simply has to be fitted with the manual gearbox, because then it is the most complete driving experience imaginable. Yes the extra weight out back makes it a little keener to rotate and the increased spring rate takes a little comfort away, but the R8 always had some ride comfort to spare. But the key is that manual gearbox - what other car offers over 500hp, perfect weight distribution and the chance to shift yourself? And it's one of the great shifts too, much sweeter than a Gallardo's.

Conservatively it's lost £10/mile in depreciation!

There's currently a glut of the over-priced, uninspiring R8 GT models in the classifieds, but the real gem of the R8 range is this car. It's good enough to make me want one over a 997 GT2, even if the claimed 0-62mph time of 2.4sec is a little optimistic.

Interestingly, the website www.howmanyleft.co.uk lists more manual V10 coupes than R tronics sold in the UK, but the stick-shifters seem to come-to-market far less frequently. The owners must want to hang onto them.

Had the pleasure of driving an R8 V8 at a supercar day a few years ago. I simply could not get over how much fun it was.. everything about it put a smile on my face. The looks, the driving position, the noise, and the way it behaved on the track. The instructor was encouraging as not many people had opted to drive the R8 that day (everyone seemed to be going for Ferraris!) so really got to give it some stick, and even after a pheasant ran out on track in front of me as I was hitting 120MPH my confidence in the car wasn't shaken as I managed to get around it without drama.

On the same day I drove several other much more expensive cars but the R8 stood out for me as much more the drivers car.

I can only imagine the V10 one is even more exciting.. would love to have one for a weekend!

A friend has the V10 manual in spyder form, there can't be many of those left about.

I've only driven the flappy paddle versions, but I must prefer the single clutch boxes to the dual clutch boxes as it at least leaves you, to a small degree, as part of the gear change.

As for laying down 200 yards of rubber in 3rd... I'm not one to argue but you'd have to really set the car up to do that, it's not a simple case of rolling on the throttle as the article implies.

Still, great cars, and having tracks the V8 and the V10 back to back all I can say is if you can't afford a V10, don't drive one as they're so much better than the V8s.

I haven't been lucky enough to drive one, but from what I've read I think the R8 is my favourite of its generation of "mini" supercars.

Well you answered your own question: a Gallardo. smile

And you can get a purer, RWD only version.

But most of all, the Audi is never going to be a Lamborghini, and anyone who has petrol in their veins aspires to Italian supercar ownership. smile

I'm glad I'm not the only one mourning the slow death of DIY gear-shifting. I'm feeling the pain now, having just moved to Malaysia - try looking for a car with a manual gearbox here and your choices are limited to low-spec Protons and Peroduas, and a few weather-beaten old European and Japanese nails from the 80s and 90s. Or you could import anything you like (and pay five times the UK price)...

Sadly though the Lamborgini is going to be an Audi. And therefore a bit German.

A couple of years ago I gave my brother an experience day in a gallardo and an r8. The r8 was a manual and afterwards both of us agreed the r8 was a much more fun experience to drive. The gallardo felt a bit boring after playing with the r8's open gate stick. Lovely car. I'd be happy with either engine and that shift. Back to reality...

The biggest problem i'd have buying one of these is a lack of funds. The second biggest problem would be the gallardo. The baby lambo just seems better looking, more dramatic and people would see you as a lambo driver not an audi driver. I know gallardos are a common sight in some areas but they arent in south wales. Cant help feeling the r8 would get lost amongst the sea of tt's that litter the streets and if i was shelling out 100k thats not what i'd want. By far my favourite audi though.

Why the torques so (relatively) low on these?

Do other five litre normally aspirated engines generate a lot more?

To many people the shoutiness (if that's a word) of the Lambo is a bad thing. I actually think the R8 is a more interesting looking design than the Gallardo, which is rather "generic supercar".

Not all cars are bought to be seen in, some of them are for driving.

To some people not having everyone stare at you all the time is a good thing.

Love these cars, and the Lambo sister, just for the noise of that V10. Absolutely fantastic.
