ABT Audi A1 quattro

More than 300hp now on offer in Audi's pocket rocket

Famed Audi tuner ABT has turned its hand to Ingolstadt's smallest model. Strangely, however, it is currently only offering a tuning package for the very expensive, very rare A1 quattro.

If you've forgotten, the A1 quattro was launched earlier this year. Limited to just 333 units and costing £40k, the A1 quattro appeared to be a precursor to a fully-fledged S1. With 256hp and 258lb ft from its 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, it certainly didn't want for power and suggested a more widely-available flagship A1 could be a great driving prospect. Chris Harris was on the snowy launch; see his video here.

ABT clearly believes that 250hp-plus isn't sufficient in a car that features a 1.2 as its base model. So, its A1 quattro now makes 307hp and 295lb ft, gains of 51hp and 37lb ft. ABT hasn't released any details on the modifications, but the usual remap, exhaust swop and boost pressure, er, boost are your most likely suspects.

Homage wheels but no five-pot warble

In terms of performance, ABT claims a 0-62mph time of 5.4 seconds, compared to the standard car's 5.7. ABT says its car doesn't incur any additional penalties in terms of fuel economy and emissions.

Of course, this package is presently only really relevant to the 333 A1 quattro owners. But when the more mainstream S1 inevitably appears, a similar upgrade from ABT could surely be similarly applied. A circa-300hp A1 with the typically subtle Audi 'S' styling cues? Could be fun...

Applaud the effort, but what a waste of time on a car of only 333 units (perhaps good to showcase the company though)

Not much of a 0 - 60 time gain.

Front end looks like an Evo X...good.

Rear end looks like a new Mini...turd.

Let's hope it's more Evo than Mini.

I love this little car, but as you point out, all that expense on an original plus the cost of tuning it doesn't really result in anything truly rapid.

I guess it's quick for what it is, which makes it unique.

307bhp in a car that weighs the same as a biscuit?

Fun Time Frankie

I actually quite like that, probably the only car I would buy brand new. That and a new Jaaag. So when is the S1 supposed to be released?

I really don't see the point of these tuning packages for cars that are built in very limited numbers such as the 1M and the A1 Quattro...surely you'd want to keep these rarer cars original??

If you want something a little more attainable, the new S3 has just been unveiled today:
The raw stats are quite impressive:
300PS. 0-62mph in 5.1 seconds. And over 40 mpg.

Except that modern biscuits are heavy - they used to be light because they didn't have to meet strict teeth resistance guidelines - so we had the NICE and Digestives by the tube but with modern Health and Safety/Fat People pressing down ever more on the industry we now have things like the Rocky Road and the Hob Nob Energy Bar, weighed down with chocolate and syrup and marshmallow and other extras no-one really needs and which, as a result, weigh the same as a small post office...

and cost a lot...

and make you a fat git...

What I really want to know is when A1s will be 3 for 2 at Morrisons...
