Time For Tea? Enzo awakening

If you can't drive it flat out you may as well geek out over the engineering...

I arrogantly started mentally drafting this story with an intro along the lines of 'somehow the Enzo seems to have passed me by...' as if I had some god given right for it not to have done. But bear with me! It kind of did, insomuch as I ever stood a chance of getting near it.

Enzo geekery ahoy!
Enzo geekery ahoy!
The F40 is 'my' mega Ferrari of choice, which is probably down to my age and its arrival coinciding with my awakening to such things. Since then I've been lucky enough to get up close to a few Ferraris, even drive a couple of them. But the Enzo? Dunno, it's just not a Ferrari that's ever really captured my imagination for some reason.

And then James at DK Engineering sent me this little vid and I think I had a bit of an awakening. Just how much fun can you have with an Enzo on busy public roads in the Home Counties? Not much if you're looking to explore the outer reaches of its performance. But plenty if you choose to fetishise its engineering, geek out over the details and basically, and for want of a better word, make a little Enzo grumble flick.

Time for an Enzo revival?
Time for an Enzo revival?
So if you're expecting 200mph plus, clouds of Harris-esque tyre smoke and a white knuckle ride then, sorry, you'll be disappointed. If, however, a little quiet reflection on what makes the Enzo special, why it's more than a mere supercar and appreciation of some of the nerdy 'aw, now THAT'S cool' detail is enough then brew up, sit back and enjoy. Who knew there was so much to enjoy looking at a pedalbox, eh?

Love that grey metallic enzo - really suits the car and makes it somehow look more "modern".

The story evo ran a year or so ago made me smile - they ran the (then new) RS3 and some other super-bhp 4wd hatches including the cosworth WRX STI against an enzo on some twisty alpine roads - with the thought that that mega-hatches would be right up there challenging the "old-school" 2wd supercar.

It actually transpired that the hatches got nowhere near the enzo - it just blitzed them!

The wing mirror is £1080 + VAT (shell without glass); well, it used to be anyway!

Small change compared to a Zonda mirror then.

I remember the year these launched and I saw one at the Brum Motorshow. I ignored the 'no touching' signs and reached out for a tentative bit of caressing...

... at that exact moment the clasp on my watch came un-done and my watch turned heavy-side down as I lowered my hand and I took away a nice big chunk of red paint frown

That's the tale of me perfecting my "I didn't do it" walk.

Back in 2005 I was travelling along the A50 around Derby when a red one of these went by me (JCB?). Spotted him in the mirror, so just about managed to get the window open in time to hear it go past, through the roundabout and take off up the road. For the next hour it was all I could think of, which wouldn't normally be strange for me other than I was on the way to Nottingham to pick up my new car

BTW, I remember a well-known high-end car dealer saying he had no problem dealing in Veyrons and F1s, but wouldn't touch an Enzo because no-one knew what they would do market-wise. Think that was about 2004 and they were trading around £350-400k, so pretty much list from what I remember. Mind you, a CGT could be picked up for a lot less back then AFAIR

Wasn't there a black one there too? Think I was there, but the only reason I recall is because supposedly Jay Kay turned down the invitation to buy one until he saw the black show car and managed to bag a cancelled order. Then he wrote "Black Devil Car" about it. Still prefer his old F40 though wink

Funny, Im the same. Not in the same league as the F40 etc.

What I did laugh about though was I was in Miami a good while ago hanging out in Southbeach, its quite big for cars at the weekend with folk bringing their toys down to cruise up and down the 1 mile strip for a piece of ass!

Well there was an Enzo cruising up and down there. What amused me was amounst all the regular 911¡¦s and big muscle cars was some bloke who had spent $1M dollars on a car to cruise up and down burds, or I suppose guys (it was Southbeach afterall)¡K. I have to say. I liked his style! ƒº

Here is a nice vid of the aforementioned F40, engineering focussed cinematography blended with some hoonage. The germanic fella with the round glasses is mereley a bonus.

Do please think the value of these will increase if the Enzo replacement turns out to be a hybrid/is turbo charged?

Indeed, I think the Veyron's is circa £15k or £16k, according to a TG special DVD.

My favourite Ferrari of all time. Was a big fan of the black, but after viewing that clip, the grey is also very striking.

PH, you guys have surpassed yourselves this week. 918 special yesterday, Enzo today, roll on tomorrow and SOTW for Friday.

Loving your work!

I didn't "get" the Enzo for a while. Then I had the opportunity to sit on the floor in a mostly-empty La Galleria (Ferrari's museum) next to one and just look at it. The details are incredible, and (I am going to hate myself for this yuck) the stance on the floor was simply perfect.

It's not pretty though, I will agree but that doesn't make it any less desireable. Purposeful. When standing still, it looks like it's waiting... waiting.

It's definitely one of my lottery win cars.

Silver actually makes the car look different. And white gives it an 80's feel.

Who am I kidding? I'd happily murder boat loads of puppies to get any iconic Ferrari in any colour!

The silver Enzo and F40 above look absolutely fantastic. Is it just the pictures, or are these cars painted in a paint with particularly large metallic flakes in it, compared to your average resale-silver diesel Merc or Focus?

I got to spend a lot of time around Chris' Enzo when a friend of mine was repainting it (KDS) - the more time I spent the more I appreciated it, and noticed little things that I really liked.

It's an out and out race car, with some fantastic details. It made me smile every time I saw it smile

I'm going to ruin this thread now with a blue chrome F40.
