Turbo Forester is back, officially

The one credible performance SUV returns to the UK with a 280hp turbo

Back in the 1990s if you wanted a Subaru, the odds were that it was an Impreza Turbo 2000. They were, for a time, the biggest news in performance motoring: a four-wheel-drive saloon that offered vast tracts of grip and huge power.

But while everyone had heard of the Impreza, there was another Subaru that gained itself a smaller but no less devoted following: the Forester.

The Forester was an Impreza wearing a Barbour jacket and wellies. It used the same platform and in S-Turbo guise the same two-litre boxer turbo engine, albeit de-tuned to 177bhp. That still meant it had poke though, and despite its awkward looks, it was a genuinely entertaining steer. As a result, it’s remembered with fondness by many PHers.

The current car didn't get the turbo option, but the new one, arriving around May next year, will.

It looks just as ungainly as the old ones ever did, but under the bonnet there's the option of a 280hp 2.0-litre direct-injection petrol turbo, even in the UK. Not so good news is that it'll only come with a CVT ‘Lineartronic’ automatic gearbox.

First-gen S-Turbo gained a cult following

Now this is concerning. We can't think of any belt drive auto 'box that's mated to a properly sporty set-up. The closest is Audi's Multitronic CVT available with the two-litre TFSI petrol engines in models like the A4.

The upside is that Subaru is a company stuffed with brilliant engineers (if not designers) so we're certain it won't be completely pony. We know it'll have eight pre-progammed ratios for example.

It did get us thinking about manual Forester turbos, and that led to a root around in the classifieds.

First up, this Forester STi (pictured top). This really was the Forester everyone had been crying out for, and while it was never an official UK import, this one’s in stock and ready to be imported as soon as someone puts down a deposit.

It doesn’t quite have the sleeper chic of the original and it's pricey, but it’s still a neat alternative to an Impreza – and with 280hp from a 2.5-litre boxer turbo that was later fitted to the third-generation Impreza WRX STi, as well as a six-speed manual 'box, we reckon it’s the fastest standard production Forester that Subaru ever made.

If the STi’s a bit too showy for you, you could try this second-generation UK market XT Turbo for a shade under £4,000. It’s got a few toys, including heated seats and cruise control, plus of course the all-important turbocharged boxer, again the 2.5-litre version, and with reasonable mileage and a full history, it’s likely to be fantastically reliable. The best bit, though, is that its plain-jane looks will mean only the very well-educated will have any idea of its potential.

I like the idea of that STi one - debadge it, fit a smaller bonnet vent (if it'd still get enough air), proper wheels, maybe even a whole XT front end, and it would be an awesome sleeper.

But £13k seems like a lot to me.

A highly speculative price from NewEra, but thats their thing...

With the exhange rate as it is Im surprised that anyone still bothers. When I imported cars from Japan sterling was worth 210-240 Yen - now youre luck to see half that.

I was only pondering the value of getting a snorkel fitted to my turbo S last night.

Great car.

For International Motors, correctly specifying the Subaru model range has always been something of a challenge.

"The one credible performance SUV" scratchchin

I'd always through that particular sobriquet was best applied to the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT. Even my humble Hemi 5.7 makes 360hp.

What was that you were saying about 280hp?

'Performance' involves corners! A Forester is a high capacity Impreza estate, for all intents and purposes and its performance is similar to that of an Impreza.

The cars have certainly fallen from grace and their owner profile now is disappointing, but a turbocharged Forester will see off pretty much anything else where performing is the key, over outright performance.

Nice to see the Forester making news, shame though that the pricing of new Subarus has lost them that usp they had 5-10 years ago.

btw...the XT in the ad is a 2.0 not a 2.5 (it even says so on the advert), overpriced at £4k too.

This article clearly spotlights the commercial suicide that Subaru are committing on a grand scale. The reason we all have a soft spot for the Forester is it was entertaining, did its job brilliantly. The reasons we all loved the old school Scooby STIs are the same, that's why they sold in big (for Subaru) numbers. Today, they proffer lackluster models that are plainly not as good as the ones they replace (almost any 90's Impretza goes, handles, looks better than today's awful crop). CLUE: That's why you are selling a quarter the numbers you were 5 x years ago. Wakey-wakey Subaru, sack your product team and let the designers you already have make exciting cars again!

FHI/Subaru arent to blame for the range that we see here - there are plenty of exciting JDM models. The blame lays squarely with International Motors who are the concessionaires; they specify the models imported, the specs (remember tweed trim and headrests on early UK Turbo 2000s compared to the sports seats and trim on JDM cars?) and set the prices.

As soon as the Impreza turned into a success, despite IMs incompetence, then IM immediately started to profiteer from the restricted supply and great demand (2.0l Sport being a case in point, although there are many).

Theyre completely inept.

You may want to look into things a bit more.
Apparently (if standard) your 5.7 only makes 322bhp and at best manages 0-60 in 6.9 and 130mph. (unless you have a brand new US market one)
Even a standard UK Forester with only 226bhp will do 0-60 in 5.8 and 134.

The STI apparently has the same performance stats as the GC SRT despite having 100bhp less. And I reckon would give one a good beating on a road or track.

I had an XT 2005 Turbo and all I had was problems!! It cost me a fortune keeping it on the road for the 2 years that I owned it, the wheel bearings were extortionate I had to replace the two rear and they were 270 quid each! Not sure if I was just unlucky but the one I had was not reliable at all. It also liked to guzzled the fuel so I would not buy one if your intending doing a lot of miles. Only good thing I can say about it was you could almost take it anywhere in the snow.

sales in USA yes, sales in the UK a big fat no, they are shocking (I am a huge Subaru fan, just purchased an '05 plate Forester)

the above is pretty much spot on; to use the forester as an example. The Forester in this guise is a brilliant design, car like yet capable off road etc, they then turn it into just another SUV and it gets lost in the crowd, then Skoda bring out the Yeti IMO a modern version of the Forester and sales soar...
