You Know You Want To: Porsche 911 (996) Carreras

A double whammy of manual 996s for under £10K. You'll have to swallow a couple of brave pills first, though...

‘Oh look, a cheap Porsche’. If you’re a seasoned PHer, you’ll have heard that phrase before, and you’ll be the first to counter it with the response ‘There’s no such thing.’ And you’re probably right – but still, if you’re feeling brave, these two 911s could be hard to resist. Both come from the 996 era, both are manual Carreras – and both are priced at under £10,000. Which makes them something of a bargain. In fact, as people inevitably cotton on to the price for which early 996s are selling these days, this might be your last chance to get hold of one for this sort of price.

Genuine Porsche accessory leaves. Maybe.
Genuine Porsche accessory leaves. Maybe.
First up, there’s this silver example. It’s a MY2000 model, which means it gets the 300hp 3.4-litre engine, and the owner says it’s been priced to reflect the mileage. At 102,000 miles, it’s on the high side for a 2000 car, but in the grand scheme of things not stratospheric. The other reason for the low price, we’d suggest, is the claim of ‘part service history’ – a sign that the attention paid to the car’s upkeep might not have been as strenuous as it could have.

That said, it is finished in an inoffensive silver-and-black colour scheme, and if the pictures are anything to go by, there doesn’t appear to be an awful lot wrong with it, apart from the fact that it seems to have been parked under a tree for a couple of weeks. The seller claims it’s in above average condition, and it’s had a recent new radiator.

Blue and yellow. Not a classic colour combo...
Blue and yellow. Not a classic colour combo...
If that doesn’t float your boat, though, how’s about one with even lower mileage? This 1998 example has done just 90,000 miles, which is a pretty respectable figure for a 15-year-old car. The rather yellow leather interior (‘Savannah’, in Porsche speak) might be one reason for its price, but we’d suspect that’s got more to do with the conspicuous lack of any mention of service history in the advert. It may well have some, but you’d think a trader would be keen to include it in the advert if it did, so we’d put money on that not being the case. Then there’s the matter of that slightly awkward-looking aftermarket exhaust...

Still, if you’re feeling brave enough to buy a 996 with questionable history, either of these cars could represent one of the best deals on a 911 going. We stress the emphasis on the word ‘could’, of course. Tempted?

Tempted, not by either of these but similar ones on the market at the moment with slightly less ropey history.

I could be tempted. I even swapped my Elise for a 996 C2 for a weekend and had a great time.

However it's the only car I've ever been in that I've noticed had a cheap nasty interior. I know that it doesn't really matter, but I only noticed it as I was stranded in it with the MIL light on for hours, which has sort of put me off them a little.

These were the cars that were on my wall as a kid. Loved the Turbo wheels, take me back to my mid teens.

(Off topic but I remember seeing an E31 8 series with them and loving it).

It's now firmly in the realms of weekend car - although I must say, I never had a poster of the interior on my wall!

Are they a good deal though??

Anybody looking to get into some cheap pork, could use these two as a ref, and then look at the wealth of cars with much lower miles, and s/h for a few grand more.

There are some great Carrera2 available for low teens.

Or would it make more sense financially to chuck a bit more at it now...

I'll admit that I've never driven or owned a Porsche. My only experience is as a passenger in a (non-S) Boxster, which I enjoyed.

For some reason, though, I feel more interested in the 90s 964, 70s or 80s cars.

As a sub-£10k 996 owner, I suggest these cars are fantastic (although I'd leave the blue one alone to b e honest). There probably are some better value ones for around the same money.

They are fantastic cars, and provided they are maintained correctly (with some bits upgraded) they make brilliant daily drivers.

I'd rather spend the money on a good 986 if I wanted a Porsche of that era in that price bracket.

Its actually the Savannah interior that puts me off the blue one. EVERYTHING is sand coloured, and its just too much.

Saying that, my colleague has a T reg Carrera 4 with an entirely green interior, and I believe he self services it, so it would probably be cheaper than both the examples in the article!
