Honda's fast and furious

Curious aftermarket S2000 add-ons and raging (yes, raging) Mugen CR-Z RZ among Honda curiosities on show in Tokyo

One may joke about the requirement for Honda to keep up supply of S2000 body panels given the early reputation of the car for off-piste excursions. Perhaps to provide incentive to cool your boots before letting VTEC kick in too strongly and attempt any drifting heroics, this new kit shows what you might have to bolt in place of your mangled bumpers.

This being the Honda S2000 Modulo Climax, a concept based on … a car Honda doesn’t make any more. Which is an interesting twist on motor show convention, given that this car will be on the official Honda stand at the forthcoming Tokyo Auto Salon, starting on January 11. Modulo is the trading name for Honda Access Corporation, an officially-licenced aftermarket parts and accessories sub brand, this S2000 Climax perhaps intended for owners wishing to jazz up their aging roadster with ‘cutting edge aeroform design’ and ‘a chic interior coordinated in black and burgundy.’ Thanks but we'll probably stick with the original look.

An odd mix of vaguely retro, chrome ‘enhanced’ (one word for it) front end and vented Super GT-esque rear bumper let’s just say it’s an inventive twist on a familiar favourite. And one, unlike other JDM exotica often denied to us, that can probably happily remain on Japanese soil.

A shame that’s also the case for another car on the stand, namely the limited edition CR-Z Mugen RZ. Safe to say the rather limp standard CR-Z hasn’t exactly set our world on fire, cute CRX-inspired styling or not. Mugen’s take sadly keeps all the hybrid gubbins but does at least add a centrifugal supercharger too. That’s good for 156hp and 136lb ft in total, a useful upgrade over the standard 124hp and 128lb ft though perhaps not quite enough to live up to the lairy looks and Mugen tuned suspension and brakes. Still, a step in the right direction.

Shame they couldn’t make it look more like the achingly cool CR-Z Super GT racer though.

hmmm, if you were desperate to start bolting body kits on to a car that looks like the dragon from 'How to train your dragon' i'd stick with Mugen or the like!

The kit in the article just takes the S2000 back in time IMHO.

Oh what a sad state of affairs.

The golden age of banzai Japanese performance cars is a long distant memory.

I think my lawnmower could give that Mugen CRZ a run for its money.

Has someone at Honda/Mugen had a bump on the head?

Very sad and very weird!

The S2000 has the pre-2004 rear lights and post 2004 headlights....

It must be a cut and shut ;-)

Very unusual, the interior is mainly pre-2004 with a post-2004 style steering wheel.

On that subject, although the outside looks a mess, the interior looks very good. I plan to get mine retrimmed in that style.

The tonneau cover looks nice too, but unlike the standard one I doubt it would fold up and go in the boot as easily!

"Coventry". The only think that can appear in motoring literature alongside "Climax" without sounding st.

The RZ looks amazing, shame it's power output is so limp.

Well that says it all really. A car which they don't make any more and a tarted up hybrid is all Honda can put forward for a performance car show, proof it any were needed as to just how far the once mighty Honda have fallen.

They really can't get a replacement for the S2000 and NSX out quick enough IMO.

Think I prefer the original look.

The phase 2 (2006) S2000 looks so good it just does not need tacky body bits, the S2000 is the only car I would sell my MX5 for.

Saw about this last week and couldn;t work out if it was a joke. Definatley an older S2000 that has been f*cked over.

The CRZ is also disappointing. Judging by my local Honda dealer even the salesmen are bored with their current range - they still have pictures of S2000s on the wall.

Will be keeping mine standard cheers.

The Mugen CRZ must be one of the most awesome new cars out there. Shame the powerplant sounds st.

Those looks, what a waste!

Yet another four-cylinder car with exhaust exiting both sides at the rear? Always kills it for me.
