RE: Aston Martin releases Centenary Edition models
Tuesday 15th January 2013
Evidently our little retrospective on models past wasn’t quite enough of a celebration for Aston Martin of its 100th year in business, as the company’s just announced a quartet of special editions to mark the occasion.
Aston Martin releases Centenary Edition models
100-year milestone is celebrated with a squirt of paint and a smattering of special leather
A Centenary Edition of the V8 Vantage, DB9, Rapide and Vanquish will all be available, with just 100 examples of each to be sold. Changes won’t be expansive – they’ll amount to a ‘unique graduated’ paint finish, whatever that means, as well as sterling silver Aston Martin wing badges on the outside. Meanwhile, inside the Centenary Editions will get ‘Deep Soft black leather’, which previously only featured in the One-77, as well as contrast silver stitching and embroidery in the headrests and a sterling silver sill plaque.
What’s more, if you order one, you’ll get a unique presentation box containing a number of gifts, such as glass keys, bespoke key pouches, solid silver cufflinks, a Rollerball pen and Bang & Olufsen headphones. All of which is lovely, but perhaps a little less trinketry and a little more oomph wouldn’t have gone amiss, as would befit Aston’s illustrious past? Not that it will matter too much; these Centenary Editions are sure to be snapped up, at any cost. Which is handy, because prices are strictly on application.
Discussion
When a sports/super car manufacturer releases its special centenary models with special paint, fancy leather and a few trinkets in a box, there's something a bit amiss. Perhaps they just don't have the money to do anything slightly more special, but strapping a great bit supercharger to something would have been a nice start.
Roger Daltrey of The Who fame had a special graduated paint silver/grey Ferrari 308GTS back in the early 1980s. Maybe it was a 100th birthday present to himself!
Anyway it subsequently got vandalized with paint stripper and eventually repainted in regular silver.
Mind you that was in the days before the magicians at "Chips Away" existed

Another special edition.
Vantage is old but Vantage S freshened it up nicely. The Vanquish II is completely new, The Rapide S is about to be heavily updated and the DB9.2 has changed hugely from the original car, all three just started production. So... what's your point? Let me guess, don't actually have one?
Aside from the fact that the current crop are undeniably pretty, I've never really 'got' Astons.
That said, I do understand they have a long racing and motoring pedigree and carry a high degree of cache and credibility.
Plus, there cannot be many sports car manufacturers that get to ceelbrate a centenary, let alone a name like Aston Martin.
So how do you mark the occasion?
A new model? A limited edition run with special engines, design features, materials and maybe invitation only for long standing customers? Something that had been years in the planning (its not like a centenary sneaks up on you)?
No.
You issue the same car with some tat.
What a wasted opportunity.

There are a lot of events for owners and AMOC members, but if this truly is it, then that is a poor attempt. Perhaps the V12 Vantage Roadster should have been released as the 'Centenary car', there are only 101 of them being made so it effectively is just that... It just was not marketed as such which is a mistake.
