Aventador Roadster 'faster than jet ' - official

Lamborghini takes over Miami airport to prove a pointless point

Any dusty old runway would have done, truth be told. But, ever keen to make a noise about stuff, Lamborghini twisted some arms, greased some palms and did whatever was necessary to briefly close the south runway at Miami's international airport to run five Aventador LP700-4 Roadsters at over 200mph to kick off a 10-day "media launch and dealer education programme."

Our invitation must have got lost in the post or something.

Best place to launch a Lambo? Not sure...
Best place to launch a Lambo? Not sure...
Anyway, why did they do this? Um. Well. Because it proved that the Aventador can go faster than the typical take-off speed (150-180mph) of the airliners that can usually be found there, apparently the busiest airport for international flights in the US. Or so boasts the press release.

Skinny-suited Lambo boss Stephan Winkelmann was suitably thrilled about this very public maxing out of the new Aventador Roadster, saying he could "think of no better place to celebrate its launch" than Miami. If you beg to differ feel free to suggest alternatives below.

Pressed for a comment Ken Pyatt, deputy aviation director for Miami-Dade, said, "Both our organisations are focused on efficient performance and providing our customers with innovations." Suggesting he'd perhaps stumbled into the wrong press conference. Or was as confused as the rest of us as to the need for Lamborghini to prove this point.

Another pointless test.

Although I wouldn't say no to having a go!

Admirably pointless. Also, why is Colin Montgomerie in the passenger seat of the first Lambo?

First with an "Americans only drive fast in straight lines" style comment.

They should have done this at Heathrow. Or Gatwick.

Lamborghini's official press release said:
Prior to the high speed demonstration, the Lamborghinis were joined by an American Airlines Boeing 777 and lined-up for a photo shoot on the runway.

Due to integrated planning on behalf of Miami-Dade officials and the FAA, there was no impact on flight arrivals and departures.
Cheers,

They'd have been closed because of an inch of snow, or the wrong type of rain, or we're in recession so they can't afford it etc etc etc.... in short the UK is too bloody miserable, so why would they come here?!

I've only met a few hypercar owners and they all seemed rather nice. You must have met some different ones.

I would suggest writing them a letter to find out the answer but I suspect they would be shut for a month trying to decipher what the fk you are whittering about. wink

I think they chose Miami because 1, most Lambos that will never be fired in anger are sold to Americans and 2, Americans are the only people that would be impressed by a stunt like this.

150-180 that's a broad spectrum, lots of cars will go 155mph, even my run of the mill focus will, so? As mentioned, seems a pointless test or point to prove, fast car goes fast shocker, come back when they're going faster than jets at cruising altitude and speed, then i'll be interested.

Bit bitter due to no invitation? hehe
Since when did anything Lamborghini do need to have a point to it?

The Saab 9-3 is also faster than a jet…. Round the top gear test track that is.

Erm, shouldn't that read "Faster than a jet, except when the jet takes off and goes faster - official"?

Is the selling point that a Lambo doesn't take off at 150mph? If so I suggest they look back through the press cuttings at their own legendary Muira, which ironically and memorably did take off at 150mph (at the front end) and had to be redesigned to stop it happening.

As others have said, lots of things do 150-180mph. A fridge off a cliff for example.
