Pic Of The Week: 911 & 991

Classic shot of quinquagenarian Porker and its offspring is our favourite this week

Hopefully, you’ll have enjoyed our piece on the 50th anniversary celebrations of the 911 earlier this week. If you did, you’ll be happy to hear this week’s Pic is taken from the batch of photos we acquired to go therewith. And if you didn’t ... well, sorry.

Anyway, this image shows pretty clearly the effect of 50 years’ evolution on the 911. It’s rather a lot wider, notably longer, but a smidge lower; the tail’s risen, the front end’s more... erm... slopey... and a few of the shut lines have been smoothed away, but at heart, the relationship between the two is face-smackingly obvious.

There are few cars – in fact, there’s no car we can think of – that’s been through this many successive iterations and still retains such a clearly traceable stylistic link to such a historic predecessor. This image celebrates that fact perfectly. Enjoy.

Traditional (4:3)
Computer widescreen (16:10)
TV widescreen (16:9)
Portrait (smartphone, etc)

Nice pic, but as it is Pedantic Friday...readit the write-up and the picture don't seem to relate:

"Anyway, this image shows pretty clearly the effect of 50 years’ evolution on the 911. Not sure whether I can see from "this image" that it is "rather a lot wider", nor that the "tail's risen" nor that "shut lines have been smoothed away". Even though this may be true...

Ho hum, I'm off to rearrange some paper clips and put my collection of matchboxes in chronological order getmecoat

The Corvette has a less unique/distinctive but still notable stylistic link. Maybe not to the original 1953 model but between the 1963 C2 and the 2013 C6 which is 50 years worth. It also has the benefit of NOT looking like a VW Type 3 Fastback. wink

All that does really is show how dull and predictable the 911 is. Apart from the front end sagging a little like a fat-boy sat on it, it hasn't really changed. I used to like the 911, but post 1980's, they all the same pretty much.

Yup, definitely a more startling stylistic link than a current Morgan 4/4 and those that preceded it (back to the second series in '55, and then past the refresh to '36).
Still quite like an early 911 but at the money they ask now it'd be impossible to ignore the 356....

The picture fills me with sadness. The new 911 is a bloated pastiche of its modest, compact and rather gentle ancestor.

FAR more common parts too. The 911s dont even share a bonnet badge.

The 911 has been through far more iterations than the Land Rover, hence why it keeps nothing of the original bar the styling

I happened across these two 911s whilst in San Francisco.

No question which is cooler.

For sure the one in the foreground would gain more respect from me

I rather like this image that neatly fills the gap between the early car and the 991 in the OP....

Good editing going on from the members today. The early cars are so cool now ....unfortunately this side of the pond they are so much more expensive than a few years ago. The new cars look like pixars compared to the old-but hey let's not get maudlin' here. So here's my contribution, sadly I had to sell Bertha but at least Pistonheads got me the sale.
