Alfa Gloria concept revealed

It's a lot more glamorous than the Nissan of the same name, that's for sure

Alfa Romeo has announced a new concept that it’ll be bringing along to Geneva. It’s called the Gloria, and it’s rather voluptuous four-door saloon that, Alfa says, is intended as ‘another international challenge’ – which means it’s supposed to be an Alfa that’d sell well in Asian and American markets.

It’s been designed by Masters students at the European Design Institute in Turin, in order, supposedly, to try and get a "completely independent interpretation of a new Alfa Romeo saloon," according to Lorenzo Ramaciotti, Alfa’s design boss. Nevertheless,  Alfa’s in-house design studio has been involved too, which suggests there’s been some gentle nudging in the right direction along the way.

In other words, what we’re looking at here is Alfa musing about a large four-door saloon – 166-sized or above – that it could use to try and gain a foothold in the world’s larger car markets, powered by a V6 or V8 bi-turbo. Phwoar, etc. While there’s no talk of the concept becoming reality just yet, the fact that Alfa is already talking engines indicates production of a car like this is not entirely out of the question.

Either way, there’s a chance we might see cues from the Gloria used on the Giulia – the 159 replacement that’s set to arrive next year. Those leather straps on the bonnet – supposedly intended to ape the luggage straps used on Alfas of old – probably won’t make the cut; not such a bad thing as they’re somewhat gimmicky and would likely look a bit manky after a few years’ exposure to the elements. But if the Giulia has anything in common with the Gloria, we’ll be looking forward to seeing it. And we’ll be even more excited if Alfa decides to bring the Gloria – or even a mildly diluted version thereof – to market.

I cannot see how you engineer a rear door for that? Some nice lines though but not sure about some details like the rather odd nose detailing.

Looks like it's a suicide door to me - you can see a really faint line towards the back of where the read door should be... or maybe my vision is playing tricks on me!

Some of that styling comes from the 2uettottanta, 2010:

You could reasonably expect that to make it into reality via the MX5-based Spider.

By way of example, here is the Alfa Diva from 2006:

which has sort of made it into the 4C.

By that rationale I expect you might one day see this car happen, sort of.

Oh and there's a big version of the image here: http://www.alfaromeopress.com/download/2013/ALFA_R...

Shows that there is a rear door line, and it looks like a suicide door.

Did you have a nasty experience in '97?

Looks pretty good to me and I can imagine it 'almost' making it into production looking like that.

Of course, no-one will want to buy it new in the UK, so it'll be a rare sight.

BTW, where have all the 156s gone? There seemed to be loads of them sold when they were new, but you never seen one these days...

This has lots on potencial, I really like it. Will it fit onto the 300C platform? Could bring us a large rear drive Alfa with a great engine note!

Not keen on the crease along the bottom of the doors, but otherwise it's quite a nice looking shape. I wonder if they'll ever make a car with those lights; hopefully the fact that this has them indicates that the new Spyder will look like the concept posted above.

I think it's lovely. Are those suicide doors?

...£10 says it will never make production...or even ever be heard of again...

Lovely looking car, but it will never make the production anything like that with the headlight/bonnet arrangement. That would slice pedestrians in two and decapitate todlers! would end up looking like a Peugeot with a big ghastly black bumper thingy in the middle. otherwise as a concept looks great. Although i actually spent more time looking at the background scenery....if that's real i want to go there!
