Chris Harris video: RS6 vs CLS63

Audi's sledgehammer RS6 goes up against Mercedes' slinky CLS63 Shooting Brake

I've already stated at length how impressive the new RS6 is - and also how inconsistent the product line from Quattro Gmbh seems to be. No doubt about it, the new RS6 is the best regular machine it makes.

As standard, the RS6 is limited to 155mph. This is quite fast enough for us Brits, but ze Germans understandably have a need to go a bit quicker, so the optional Dynamic pack can take you to 174mph. Clearly this won't prove a big enough fix for your committed hedonist, so the Dynamic Plus pack, which includes ceramic front discs and appears to cost more than a Mountune Fiesta ST, raises that to 189mph.

'My kind of cars' says Harris - who's to disagree?
'My kind of cars' says Harris - who's to disagree?
Now within all this excellent margin work from Audi, does anyone remember the gentlemen's agreement reached by those same Germans back in the early 90s? The one which limited everything to 155mph? Neither, it appears, does the German car industry.

AMG will lift your speed limiter, as will BMW M, as will Jaguar. Does this mean the agreement has been quietly forgotten, just like the silly Japanese power limit of 280hp? I hope so.

Porsche, Alpina and Brabus refused to sign the piece of paper from the start, which probably means they retain some of the moral high-ground, but the reality is that these speed limiters can be cracked so easily they really are, and always have been pointless.

This RS6 came with the medium setting of 174mph. Suffice to say it is quite shocking how quickly the car will run straight into the electronic safety blanket. The AMG always feels like it could kneecap a junior supercar, but on road and drag strip the Audi is something else altogether.

These really are my type of car.

Enjoy the vid.

Each to their own, but it would be the Audi for me every time, quicker, looks better, interior is nicer, quicker point-to-point in all conditions, seems a bit of a no brainer.

Could you possibly make a video that doesn't include a German car?

That would be nice, thanks!

Objectively it may be the better car but I would go for the AMG given that engine and superior steering. The final frame of them cornering makes it an easy decision for me...

was it my eyes or was the Audi seat bolster already beginning to collapse and fray?

Audi for me. I'd not spec the 21" wheels though. They look far too big.

Glad I'm not the only one who thought this!

I may have missed it but has Chris Harris just made a video without mentioning a 911? biglaugh

EDIT: no he hasn't, he mentioned one when talking about the quattro badge on the grille. Maybe next week then.

I think the Audi would be more useful. If 'useful' is valid criteria when judging £90,000 estate cars.

Good video.

Good vid as always but in the real world I'd sacrifice the Audis extra tenths for the Mercs feel good factor.

Good Point. CH whats your response?

Also why are we celebrating these? Like anyone is going to do a 0-60 sprint at the traffic lights in a built up area with 30 mph limits, or do a stop start on a national speed limit road. How moronic is that?

I can see the strange logic in owning a sports/supercar, its about the design of it, the sound of the engine, the lightness/agility of the car, the communication from the controls. These just seem like hugely fast barges. Where is the fun in driving these?

Seriously, these are nothing but statistics and bragging rights. We are no longer at school kids, or perhaps some of you are.

Other than nicer interior and better gearbox I still prefer the V10 RS6.

The ride is more than good enough on the C6 in comfort and the sound on the V8... well its just crap frankly. At least the V10 and the UR box arches.

IMHO!

I would also like to see a side by side drag race of a C6 and C7.

If you want a C6 let me know! smile

A nicely shot and interesting vid.

RS6 for me - its 4WD, engine, ZF 'box and price seal it.

And for some reason, IMHO the CLS 63 looks like a posh hearse, especially with dark rear windows.

The front view of that Audi is fantastic but charging people for the Quattro thing is wrong - charge people to REMOVE IT, exploit their bad taste smile

The prices of the cars are just stupid tho - 3 years time you'll get one of these for £25K or less, that's a staggering rate of loss meaning they'll all be in the hands of the "It's not debt really" self-deluding leasers for a while - let's hope they look after them eh? smile

I'd like to echo all three of your points.

The CLS looks incredible from some angles, but from others (front 3/4 view, for example) it really is hearse-like.

RS6 looks immense.

I've seen a couple of SBs now (not AMG ones I should add) and their biggest problem is the same as the standard CLS - too long, too low - they look like something is broken or they've been sat-on.

VERY colour sensitive too - someone locally just swapped a Mk1 CLS in Black for a Mk2 in Cream and they've gone from 'obvious mafiosi hitman' to 'melted icecream puddle',
