Toyota Supra Mk IV celebrates 20 years

Big anniversary for Toyota's last Supra; is a replacement on the cards?

Well, this is interesting. The Bank Holiday weekend saw around a hundred owners of the Mk IV Toyota Supra meet at the Heritage Motor Museum in Gaydon to mark the car's 20th anniversary. Great news, a very accomplished car still being recognised two decades after its introduction.

Not many left like this anymore!
Not many left like this anymore!
That the event was supported by Toyota, though, that makes the event more significant. Is it trying to resurrect interest in the Supra nameplate, last seen in Britain 15 years ago, ahead of a new model being announced? Frankfurt would surely be an appropriate stage, and Toyota has made no secret of its intentions to introduce models above and below the GT86. Watch this space...

For now, we have nothing but conjecture around a possible 'new Supra'. Still, the weekend's celebrations do give us an excuse to discuss one of Japan's finest performance cars.

It doesn't have the devastating all-weather pace of a Skyline GT-R or the delicate beauty of an RX-7, but the Supra is fast, engaging and, of course, eminently tuneable; it's a true legend for the Playstation generation. The regard in which the Supra is held can be seen in used prices; this UK-spec manual is £15K.

So enjoy a few pics of the last Supra we've seen in Britain. As soon as PH hears any more on a follow-up, you'll know first!

I had a JDM one of these for a couple of years. Great car. I would be very excited about a new Supra.

These have aged very well.

One of the best looking cars to come out of Japan IMO

It was a great day, sadly couldn't take mine as it's currently in about 100 pieces, but went down with a friend who has a very nice UK spec.

Toyota did supply us with a very nice hog roast aswell biggrin

ETA: been a Supra owner for nearly 6 years now(had 4 of them in various specs) and I don't intend to ever sell my current one.

Better late than never PH I emailed Paul Garlick about this 1/8/13 and attached the following images that had been released by Toyota Middle East on their facebook page that day of the proposed new supra:

Your welcome! Looks like a fat 370z in my opinion!!!

Hmmm, bit of a homophobic ad?

"In fact if it werent for the gay imports coming in these cars would be demanding the same price if not more than the Honda NSX models."

I have never understood that, why would they? The NSX market has jap imports in it aswell. I can understand that you could say that the N/A's drag the prices of the turbos down, but when it comes to the UK vs J-Spec, the most desirable model is a late model, facelift, TT6 import.

As good looking today as it was 20 years ago.

If I could afford to run one and I could get a decent unmolested one I'd love one.

That or a 300zx TT

Not sure what it is about Supra's really. I can appreciate the engineering and the speed but they just never do anything for me. I would much prefer one of the other Japanese performance models of the same era with the NSX at the top of the list.

Great, fantastactically engineered cars. They have a lot more presence in the flesh...

Here's my brother's, mine and friends, when we had them a few years ago. All JDM 6speed TT's

I prefer the mildly modified look to the standard, but some seem to go too far IMO. But each to their own...

Supra Mk4's are lovely - in manual spec.

My big problem with them is their size. They are like a barge, great in a straight line but murdered by RX7's and MR2 Rev3 Turbo's up to 60 and around corners.

Amazingly well built and a true Japanese Icon. I love them.

Always loved the Supra. One of the best engines ever in a all-round respectable package except... the looks.
OEM rims are awful and it really needs a lower front and rear bumpers to look the business.
