Now I thought I'd heard my fair share of lentilisms, but I was arguing with a Marxist today who came out with a blinder. He said he reckoned in all seriosity, to alleviate poverty and crime among the lower classes, that theft against 'rich people' should be in some way legalised 'as they don't need everything they've got'.

Middle class, cloistered little philosophy student.

I said 'OK then, so you think every thief's Robin Hood do you? Well I think you're fairly well off, so I hope you don't mind if I break into your house tonight and nick your video recorder then'.

As much as he tried to argue back, I knew I'd got him.

What's the most stupid lentil-fuelled utterence ever to pass your ears?

Should have nicked his copy of the Socialist Worker and then stated that wealth is relative...

Actually, he also said that 'all media is right-wing, capitalist, exploitative and owned by evil multinational corporations (why are multinational corporations evil?)

Socialist Worker? Grauniad? Not-So-Independant?
Come on!

beat him over the head with it.

I thought Marxism was a long dead thing, with students having to pay their way these days I thought it would have got rid of that attitude.

No, it's worse than ever, because the majority of students who can afford to and want to go to university to study Politics are from 'safe' little suburbia, where the 'crimewatch' section of the local paper consists of bread theft and parking tickets. They see the news and read the Grauniad, then get taken in by the banner-waving RageAgainstTheMachinists and/or the yoghurt-knitters, who brainwash these people, who've never visited the real world yet, and feel as though the only way they'll acccept reality is if the world ran by their childish rules.

The tutors see me as a breath of fresh air, as I'm the only non-ideological Centrist in any of my groups, it seems.

I once had a discussion with an irritating individual who was banging on about rights and equal opportunities for disabled people.

I agreed with much of what she said, but she started to piss me off when she began to advocate equal opportunities regardless of the impracticality or cost to employers.

She let herself down badly when she enthusiastically endorsed my suggestion that the signs on Motorways ought also to be in braille, so that it did not prejudice blind drivers....

Almost as bad as the time a call at the York University Students Union AGM for a Men's officer to match the Women's officer was shouted down ...by a mixed crowd.

I asked one of them (a man) why he'd opposed it afterwards. His reply? Something along the lines of 'Women are more sophisticated and men can get anything done in this world'.

I very nearly did belt him, if only it wouldn't, on the surface, validate his 'sophistication' claims.

That's possibly the most sensible thing I've ever heard from a 'lentalist'.

Why are multinational corporations evil? - well in my mind its because they only have the interests of the share holders in minds.

Everything else goes out the window in the name of profit. Good for some sure, but invariably the majority suffer somewhere down the line.

The numpties who stood up and applauded at the end of "The Day after Tomorrow."

Found the rest of the audience at them. Quite a good barney followed, 10x more entertaining than the film....

I had GreenPeace try and get me out shopping at the weekend... Oh joy.

GP: "Hello, can I interest you in GreenPeace?"

Moi: "Do you drive a 2CV?"

GP: "How did you know? Yes, I do"

Moi: "Just a good guess. Did you know that is one of the most polluting cars still on the road? Most of the components can't be re-used and do not biodegrade. You would be far better driving a modern five-litre, seven series BMW. This is made from recyclable materials, and is far less polluting than your car. Due to the advanced engine management, in dense traffic, the air from it's exhaust is less toxic than that which it sucks in."

Cue one shocked Greenpeace activist going off to question life, the universe and everything
