My colleague just now "Is that your car outside?"
"Yes, why?"
"You'd better go have a look"
Turns out that some cnut(s) has nicked my number plates during the night and I've driven all the way into work and parked my car outside the front door without any!
Now I'm buggered. I can't get plates made without the V5, which is at home. I can't go home to get it as my car isn't legal. Any ideas?

Absolutely make sure you report it and get a crime number from plod.
You WILL be getting all manner of motoring related correspondence as the only reason to nick your plates is to enable them to get up to illegal activities. Cover yourself before it happens.
Afraid it looks like you're being cloned

Bad luck
I'm guessing this type of crime is probably on the up these days.
As to your predicament, I'd just drive home as usual without the plates. The chances of being stopped are very slim and if you do, you've got a good explanation (and the worst thing you can get is a £30 fine and no points). I drove my Tiger to/from MOT and SVA tests twice (over 100miles) with no plates and passed a number of marked police cars, and not one was interested.

Seeing how often we see a car with cardboard plates on a trailer.. I would think that given the circumstances you can make some up and tape them into the usual space or in the back window.. as previously mentioned - make sure very clear and readable.. then either use www.fancyplates.com to get some made today, delivered tomorrow to work including stickers to put on.. or venture home to retrieve said V5 and trip to local Halfords.. fax the DVLA that this has happened keeping receipt of fax report, send a letter recorded as well. Sad times...

Your tax disc has the registration number on it, go to a local Motor Factors with it and the car and ask them nicely to knock some up for you.
I certainly would not worry about driving about with no plates. Stick a bit of card in the window at least it looks like you made the effort.
No need to drive home slowly

I would drive it for as long as necessary to get plates made up, but report it to the police first then you have a good excuse.
Frankly I would go to the local DVLA office with the crime report and get a new registration issued (they charge, possibly £25), if you mail order the plates it will probably only work out a little more expensive than getting shafted for a set from Halfords.
With a new registration you won't get any hassle with speeding tickets etc. and the clonee should get pulled by ANPR vans if the police have got their act together re. cloning.

Even though the law changed earlier this year, I think you will find that most car accessory shops don't bother.......
I had some made up for my trailer a few months ago, at a classic car show, whilst I waited, and was not asked for any documentation, even though the trader could have been prosecuted.......He was doing a roaring trade....

All our local motor factors are hot on this, none will allow you plates without all the documentation, which is a total fag and partly why I now only order from the likes of AB Graphics/Fancyplates/Millennium given the turnaround is quick all for a phone call or 5 mins on the internet.
Just got back. The police basically gave me a crime reference number and told me to wait until I hear more. They will be stopping any car they see with those plates on (including mine when I get new ones done) and it won't end until they've apprehended them.
They admitted that it was sensible to report it first thing, if I hadn't and the clone is involved in an armed robbery then I'd be the one having his door kicked in at 3am by the SWAT team.
I have now got to convice a halfords half-wit to issue me the plates with only a crime reference number.
p.s. as the plates were ripped off what will I need to put new ones back on. Would it be sticky tape or something stronger? It's an E36 BMW and screwes weren't used in the old ones.
