PistonHeads BMW M4 at Goodwood

Enjoy a 360-degree view of Goodwood from the front of the PH-specced BMW M4

The BMW M4 optioned up by the PistonHeads community has had its first public outing at the Goodwood Moving Motor Show, competition winners Matt Orman and Cameron Milne enjoying a run up the hillclimb in the car in the summer sunshine. Not before we had a go first though, the essential PH shakedown including - cough - scrubbing the rear tyres in and laying down some rubber on Lord March's drive. This being the Moving Motor Show and therefore more regulated than the Festival of Speed we weren't strictly meant to and, yes, we got a bit of a ticking off.

The M4 prepares for its public debut
The M4 prepares for its public debut
Via the magic of 360-degree video you can enjoy a panoramic view of our run, exuberant departure off the line included, by hitting play and then moving your mouse around for a unique viewpoint of the Goodwood hillclimb. Mobile users can click here for a fixed view - make sure you try the 360 version on your desktop when you get the chance.

Credit to everyone who pitched in with a spec too; the first BMW Individual upgraded M4 in the country 'our' car's Tanzanite Blue looked classily sinister under the Goodwood sunshine while - as you'll hear - the sports exhaust sounds the business too. Anyone who saw Tiff Needell driving it over the Festival of Speed will confirm it goes sideways pretty well too. Obviously we'd have done the same but our chaperone turned the DSC back on after our burnout...

Use your mouse to control the 360 vid, holding and dragging to find the perspective you want. It can also be controlled by clicking in the player and using the cursor keys.

Enjoy!

I hope the paintwork on the Pistonheads M4 was better than the paintwork on the M4 which was in the BMW showstand. To give them credit they seem to have resolved the orange peel which afflicted the wings of E92 M3's, but look at this photo below - that is appalling for what is a £60,000 car.

More to the point that BMW passed it for show use...

Was it just me who couldn't find the volume control on the video player? Epic sound but my whole office didn't need to hear it (and that was with headphones in). Loving the 3-D video effect. How many cameras are required to make it work?

Saw this on Thursday whilst out on the hill climb and wondered what on Earth it was doing there!

Just one - you can leap on the Kickstarter campaign and get your own for $350 right now.

That colour and spec really suits the M4, well done PHers. Cool camera too!

The colour looked awesome in the flesh. Spoke to Tiff about the car as he was queued to go up the hill Saturday afeternoon (very nice chap and loved the car!)...

Tiff did some absolutely heroic driving in that car. Absolutely loved the outrageous Scandinavian flicks in to the second part of the 1st right-hander.

What is Tiff's connection with PH? Why was he driving it?

I really really really want to like the new M3, but it just sounds like an old Megane with a burst exhaust to me. Which is a real shame.

How come they can make a decent effort with the M5, but this sounds rubbish?

I'm guessing you're a detailing nerd (a little like myself although I accept mass produced machine built cars aren't perfect)

What I cant get my head around is how my local BMW dealer has at least 100 cars, brand new and unregistered, sitting in a carpark like this.

Great view of the run up the hill.

Mass produced or not, should never see paint like that on a finished car.

Probably ordered to meet manufacturer targets.

Most cars are like that. The only way to stop it is to polish the finish flat every time you put a coat of paint/clear coat on.

That's why a hand made hand painted supercar / Rolls Royce is hundreds of thousands versus tens of thousands and why they make a handful a year verus thousands a year.

You can put it right with big hairy balls, some wet and dry paper, lots of time and a fair bit of talent.
