I watched a Discovery item on top racers.
5 the Daytona Coupe, did Le Mans.
4 Jag D-type, also did Le Mans.
3 Auto Union V16, on the skinny tires and caused drivers bloody hands . . .
2 Ford GT40, smashed Ferrari at Le Mans for years.
1 What else but the 917 . . .

All cars drive around as replicas. Especially the Fords are frequently bumped into . . . But I never saw a 917 replica and after some web serching I found none. T70s and other racers are out there in kit form. Does anyone know more?

There is. the Lazer 917 replica was made in America during the late '70s for fitment to (if you were a cheapskate) a Beetle chassis and (if you weren't) a 911 chassis. Nowadays they're all rare, the Beetle-based ones are worth peanuts and the 911-based ones fetch a decent price. There are one or two in the UK.

Here's one: www.geocities.com/replicaporsche917k/

V8 you are on it . . . But what I mean is a serious Rari killer. The shape is awesome so why has nobody bought the rights yet? It'll be a stunner like the GT Ford is . . .

Well the Fiberfab Lazer 917 (full name IIRC) is fairly adaptable - you can fit all generations of 911 engine into it, and the one on the owner's website has a 5.7 Chevy small-block a la Ultima.

Don't know why no-one makes one any more, especially seeing as they're set to be the next 'big thing' in the world's auction houses.

Theres one in Suffolk..
It will be driven in the www.SRGTC.org.uk series next year.

Should be fun, 600bhp cobras fighting it out with GT40 replicas and the 917 adding to the fray.
All this on friendly club level racing.

The problem guys is the noise of the original.
There is nothing on the planet that sounds anything like the original, and I'll tell you why.
What else has a 5 litre, flat 12, air cooled, all alloy, four valves per cylinder, four turbo, direct injection engine.
The last of them had a stonking 1100 BHP!!
The most mental motor ever made.

Exactly… anyone remember the scene from the film Le Mans where there’s an in car (917) sequence at the end of the first lap when he’s going down through the gears and breaking for and then accelerating out of the chicane before the start finish straight (Porsche Curves or Masion Blanche I think).

Exquisite…

That to me is the epitome of how a high performance engine should sound.

Lets not forget the friendly D-type drivers as well
He does have a web site somewhere but even though he is trying to make a living out of building these, he doesn't seem to promote them very well. Graham also has an immaculate GT40 replica

Ah, but the version most people know as a 917, the 917K, was normally aspirated. (Okay, the Langheck was also, as were almost all European 917s, but now I'm drifting off into an anorak-clad world of my own...)

The CanAm 917/30 had 1100PS and a couple of huge turbos. And a teensy-weensy hint of lag.

On topic, there's an Australian-built replica that had a bit of publicity (perhaps on PH?) about a year ago - I'm sure it was displayed at last year's Autosports International. Not sure about the engine, but it was something powerful.

2 911 930 G-body Turbo engines reduced in capacity to 2.5 litres, welded together, and fitted with two extra turbos?

This is the link to the Australian one I was thinking about:

www.kraftwerkz.net/

Powered by a 911 engine and looks just about spot on.

I wish someone made more replicas of the Group C racers of the '80s, such as the Jaguar XJR-9 and the Porsche 962.
